I thought it was an odd direction just by the first page since there wasn't any prior lead up to something like that, this was the first clue that this wasn't what it appeared, secondly we had that "maid" chapter and the "plane crash" fake outs that already suggested a trend. That's his name for his works too, you should be able to find them on e or n. For R-18 stuff it's a Hataraku Maou-sama doujin specifically, but the precursor for Tawawa in general was a series of KanColle doujinshi that are not R-18 but imply some darker stuff throughout them.
