I like that we get to see the others' matches, even if it's only a panel. I love the look of shock on Yuri's face--she's going to need to learn control if she cratered the wall like that without meaning to. Sasha seems confident in her skills, though I can't make out what she did to her opponent. And Lotto--I don't quite know how he came up with the idea that they're pitying Gard and letting him advance? I can't wait to see how this duel ends.

Ugh, I hate that it's a tournament style passing scheme. Because that's obviously just stupid as hell. Because then the if the best and second best fight one of them will be failed even though they shouldn't be.
It also feels really low that only 16 students are passing for such a grand academy.
But maybe there's more testing sites elsewhere? Or times per year they accept students? Weird nonetheless.

Hopefully something is actively sabotaging the magic academy and that's why the entrance exam is so stupid, and that something also being why the magic has deteriorated so much.

Yeah, literally the only thing this style of tournament can tell you is who is the best. Anything past that is meaningless because, as you said, the #1 and the #2 could face each other in the first round. Or the opposite, if you faced the worst person in the first round, second worst person in the second round, third worst person in the third round, then the fourth-worst person ends up in the top 16...
