Yeah this has happened to me before. When you're already lacking in self-esteem like Kasumi, it really hits you hard.

Happens a lot to me too, in more minor ways. Can't help but think that it was my fault, that I did something wrong, that I should have done better, that I can't keep up, that they don't like me, etc. Anything except putting the blame at someone else's feet, or even.... nobody's feet.

Her obsession with grades is also very reminiscent. I was never a good student, but I very much grounded my own worth as a person in how much output I could produce for a very long time. Still do to some extent, or in the very least it's hard not to think "I haven't done enough yet."

Longshot, but is her letter exchange partner a ghost?! I watched A video essay on Doomed Yuri and it made me think of this series. Their letter exchange, the older/younger sister trope, the pressure of what happens when school ends... I has that Taisho era nostalgia. It would be a twist if she's writing letters with a girl from a century ago.

Probably not, though. It would be much more impactful if it were an actual person.

sadness of the failed meeting aside, 'took her life' is not a sentence i expected but i'm just more relieved her parents seemed to be supportive

I'm glad I started reading this on a whim. It feels pretty rare to see something so introspective in manga and be done as well as it is

Goddamnit I knew something was off, why was it such a shock huh?
Yes I see you in the background, your not slick I know what you look like now

Oh yo that is a way to show the passage of time I dig it

OMG she has no excuse for ghosting her like that, CAUSE I SAW YOU IN THE BACKGROUND.... Ah wait I just checked last chapter, I don't think that was her, but she was definitely lurking in the background I tells ya

Pages 13-14: the jagged paneling, the black bars... This is peak manga. The composition of these pages alone conveyed the emotions the protagonist was going through perfectly, better than any number of words could. Just a great example of the mangaka playing into the strengths of manga as a medium for storytelling.
