I've been waiting 6 years for Ippo to get out of retirement.
It's way too late for me to quit this series but you should seriously abandon all hope. Maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised in another 4 years if Morikawa hasn't retired by then, but actually holding out hope for a return feels like you're just asking to have your dreams crushed.

"The better boxer won" is such a fucking baffling statement. Apparently Rosario is secretly one of the most powerful boxers in the series, considering he beat Mashiba at his most dedicated and prepared, with zero prep of his own, shit conditioning, failed weight control, lackadaisical approach to training, no regard for the sport, and a shit attitude. I guess, Takamura having also undeservedly won fights before despite showing up to the ring as a dehydrated skeleton with zero conditioning, like recognizes like here, so he has to claim that Rosario was totally the better boxer, lest people realize that world champs are just shitters who coast on nothing but raw talent propping them up.

Guessing Mashiba's announced his retirement. He's no longer got his sister to fight for now that he's accepted Ippo as brother-in-law, and he lost to Rosario despite Rosario being in shit condition, so he's probably given up on Za Warudo. He's fixed the bulk of his anger issues as well, so he can probably live a normal working life from now on, unless he decides to be a coach instead.

I'm making my own edit of this chapter where Takamura says "Mashiba lost because he didn't master the art of momentum" because well that's kinda it, innit?

It has been 84 years....

Me: Hey grandson, can you tell me if Ippo returned to the ring, please? My sight it isn't so good now so I'm unable to ready my Ippo manga :(

Grandson: Nop grandpa... but Takamura got his 20th world champion title defense.
And Ippo disciples got world champion on their ranks.

Me: And is he with Kumi? Got any kid?

Grandson: Nop... holding hands phase and just 1 kiss this whole time. They are not married too.

Me: Damn.. I guess is now a endurance to see who last longer.. me or the author...

I figure everyone is more-or-less speaking more about themselves than the fight. Sendo did some correct assessment here, Mashiba was the better fighter but he was unlucky.

For some people, that's Mashiba's karma biting him in the ass, Sendo thinks that's unfair since Mashiba was the better fighter.

For Takamura, who is "the best" and really prideful, the whole idea that some fights are decided by luck is detestable, because this whole idea would mean both that some of his fights were won because of luck (something he would never admit) and that him being "the best" is not enough, because someone might just get lucky.
So he denounces the whole thing, if there's no such thing as luck then all there is is merit, and if merit is all there is, then Mashiba was never the better fighter.

What you mean the stronger boxer won? In the entire fuckin fight he was losing. He failed his weight, didnt train, could only resort to fouling 10000x that the blind ref didnt see, and even admit himself he lost. Screw this manga, screw George, this shit sucks and i dont care where its going from here at all.

Disappointing outcome aside, that nighttime zawazawa moment of many people quietly leaving a stadium together after witnessing their boxer losing a world title in such a way must be an incredible atmosphere. Of course Aoki is there to ruin it

well, it's manga so whoever you are must be ready for some BS. I've watched boxing as in REAL boxing for 20 years and counting. One thing i can tell you for real is that when the punch hit Mashiba, in real boxing he either stunned and stepping back or he will go down. There's no counter shot from that kind of BS angle whilst hurting like hell. But, its manga so we got a BS counter uppercut and a random straight that doesn't reach and K.Oed himself throwing that straight punch. For some reason i felt the recycle of ending material with several different outcomes.
  • When Ippo got KOed it was a straight punch that he step in after he put Gonzalez in the ropes
  • When Sendo put Gonzalez in the same rope, he eat the straight and counter with that BS uppercut and won
  • and we saw this in Mashiba, but in stead of straight punch it's a hook and recycling the counter uppercut from Sendo but this time he went down.

P.S : I don't remember much about the Kimura 3 inches/cm, you guys need to remind me cause it might be way down too old for me to remember. but my point is. The outcome sequence has been recycled a few times.

Mashiba v Kimura fight.
After opening Mashiba's guard Kimura throws in a Dragon Fish Blow and it connects at the same time as Mashiba's direct right, and because Kimura's Dragon Fish punch takes a longer route and his reach is shorter, Mashiba's punch deals the most damage.

Its chapters like this that really make me wonder if the series is building up to a comeback after all. A comeback is such an obvious thing to do, but having ippo witness all these things, in combination with the fact that the author is fully aware of ashita no joe is... Theres a real conflict on whether or not a comeback is a good thing.

Is this it? Is Ippo finaly coming back to the ring? Wil Kumi stop him or encourage him to do so? Will he do it for Mashiba? it's been so long that I am starting to think Ippo might never box as a professional again.

Maybe he will do an exhibition match?

The only way I can spin this into providing Ippo fuel for a comeback is by making him realize that his way of boxing is unhealthy and doomed to fail. Ippo would always end up in a slug fest and it was just a matter of time 'till he lost or maybe making him realize that a punch can always land no matter the condition of the opponent??

I don't know, we're cooked. Maybe Mashiba becomes a vegetable or nursing case and Kumi has to take care of him and doesn't have any time for Ippo, so he gets angry and starts punching again

Mashiba regained consciousness and is blaming Ippo getting close to the sister, so he's forcing her to stay away.

Guarantee something like this is gonna be in the next chapter or two, lol

ugh even if this arc was for the purification of mashiba's boxing as sawamura claimed it still sucks super hard to end in such a fashion. I've accepted all of the other losses in this series but this one feels like actual bullshit.
