Sucks to be ippo right now, he did everything he could to help mashiba win and it went down the drain. And man that way of thinking from kumi doesn't help. She's been pursuing ippo for a long time for just one thing to happen and throw everything out the window

Yeah...like others I can only see this going the way of Kumi and Ippo separating and Ippo continuing to go down the path of learning about boxing in a more in-depth and analytical manner instead of outright training, only for this to culminate in his return to the ring for one grand finale of a match.

Weird thing is, Kumi and Ippo separating would actually be the more mature narrative since it wouldn't shoe horn in some nonsense like Ippo giving up his dreams and passions just to satisfy a girl or the alternative (objectively worse) of Kumi just suddenly deciding "You know what, you're right! I was wrong, Boxing is great actually!" like she learned a lesson to not argue against the men. Sometimes people just have conflicting paths in life and in spite of them liking each other, which is doing a lot of heavy lifting considering they don't really have any chemistry. Kumi only "likes" Ippo because he's the best option among the people her brother knows. Nothing more.

Regardless, if they just break up due to irreconcilable differences in how they want to proceed in life but remain friends I would find that acceptable. The real question is how Mashiba proceeds from here. He was robbed of his grand exit if he retires now (he fucking lost the match due to bullshit) and if he continues then there is no way Kumi just blindly accepts that even if it is her big brother (unless they assassinate her character like the aforementioned "bad" alternative). I'm more curious how Morikawa is going to move on that front than anything involving Ippo and her.

just when I thought its getting close to ippo's comeback, now it feels far again.

and now I question just how good him and kumi's relationship is for them. I never really cared before but now I kinda see it somewhat toxic or incompatible.
Even without Kumi, Ippo is also held back by he idea if he gets injured he'd leave his mother all alone. What Ippo has to learn to come back is a level of selfishness to pursue your dreams despite the risks.

So. I really dislike this, I see no reason for this type of ending for Mashiba. It feels so... gratuitous. Like Morikawa wanted to show us someone having a bad end.

No he won't die, but he will retire for sure. I'm being 100% honest here when I hope that Kumi leaves the manga as a character. What role did she even have until now, really? Stopping Ippo from returning to the ring?

I really can't see her encouraging him to get back into the ring after this. I just can't see what other possibility there is apart from them breaking off at this point....
This ain’t where the power of friendship and comrades trumps all. Go dattebayo your ass over to Naruto or One Piece for that.

Geez, that must have been a bad fall, or someone was packing plaster of paris in their gloves.

This is pure speculation pulled out of my ass, but... I wonder if there isn't going to be a rehabilitation arc. I guess this might be out of depth for an old school shounen based mangaka like George, but what if Ippo and Kumi work together to help Mashiba through rehab?

In a way, it kills two birds with one stone.
A. This clinches, once and for all, Ippo's and Kumi's relationship
B. Through Mashiba, Ippo finds a new resolve and determination

ah well, just letting my imagination run where it will. Who knows how much more advancement we'll see of the manga as a whole, after all.

Y'know I bet most people realized it way earlier, but the parallels between this fight and the fight between Mashiba and Miyata are striking. Particularly the fouls and overcoming them and then passing out 1 punch away from winning.

Vorg is a reigning champion; Takamura remains undefeated and a 3-weight champion.
Takamura is described as being a beast that vastly is different from the fighters we spend most of the time around in the story and Vorg only occasionally appears. Literally all of the emotional weight we have, those who we watch actively practice, see operate most frequently outside of the ring, get direct insight into the thoughts of are not achieving well, or when they get the chance to achieve, fail.
Legit by statistics: 2 out of the 9 we have a connection too are doing somewhat well but we’ve spent 95% of the time with the 7 that aren’t. We’re going tens, thirties, almost hundreds of chapters following the slow mediocrity or downward spiral of our characters. Not to mention that when our guys lose, they go into the hospital, they get diagnoses of life-altering injuries, they have to reconsider what their life will be or even mean from that point on. This is not a good thing.

Yeah, but more on Kumi's side. She doesn't like boxing specially now seeing Mashiba in this critical state.

I'm just thinking if this were irl I wouldn't want for Kumi to stay either and its toxic if she just accepted or change her mind instantly once Ippo gains enough desire to come back.

But writing this reply made me realize the author is good in that kind of stuff, so maybe they'll both come into an understanding or maybe a good compromise along the way... assuming Ippo does come back 😭
