Takamura said a lot of shit. Ippo literally quit because of 2 major reasons. The potential punch drunk. And Takamura BS cross the line and become a monster speech. Takamura is a big part why Ippo quit.

Takamura never was happy with the fact he "bullied" Ippo into getting boxing. Yes Ippo was strong, but, in Takamura point of view, knew nothing of the danger. He was a charging bull taking as much damage as giving other. Either he would have died in the ring or suffered so much trauma that he would have been useless for his mother.

Takamura is a brute and a asshole but he is right. Every "champion" so far were monster in their own right. Offering everythings they had to the ring and boxing. Takamura himself know that, without boxing, he would be nothing. Adding the fact that he want to offer all the world champion title he can to his coach and you have a character that see one boxer giving preferential treatmen wasting it.

Yet in this chapter it is clearly show that he is angry. Not a those three, but at Ippo and, probably, himself. I'm pretty sure he's mostly angry at Ippo for having show hope to the coach of "his style is not wrong" and yet wasting it. And I'm pretty sure he know that Ippo is not afflicted with drunk punch.

As it is now, Ippo can't go back to the ring, he would only commit the same mistake as before.

What? No. Quit talking out your ass.

He quit for various reasons.
1.He was on the verge of being punch drunk. The losses solidified his accumulated damage
2. His mother. His own health and selfish reasons to box drove him to retire and eventually inherit the fishing business. He wanted to come home healthy and not worry his mother

Takamura is an older brother. He brought Ippo into boxing. The coach is his father figure and he dislikes disappointing him. Ippo disappointed and put coach into a state of panic. He never wants to see that face again. Ippo quitting is betrayal and disappointment.

@Xxjuggernaut Oh come on. Takamura has been an ass to Ippo for a while. It seems obvious to me he's a big part why Ippo quit. His BS speech got into Ippo's head. I hate Takamura. He used to be fun. Now he's just an asshole. A soon to be blind in one eye asshole.

@4V29LN0n Are you daft? Takamura has ALWAYS been an asshole.

No. He's not the reason why Ippo quit. Literally, quit talking out your ass.

True, Ippo has to fight like a demon, else he's only going to get himself killed. He needs that damn bloodthirst back.

Takamura is right in what he says but at the same time I think him being an asshole really has been turned up a notch since the preparation for the Gonzales fight. Important to note that that only towards Ippo specifically. He has had the same level of asshole towards the others for a while now.

I think the main reason Takamura is angry is because Ippo's losses and the resulting aftermath caused Kamogawa to mostly look at Ippo, but not at him anymore. This is still the case and it irks Takamura that Kamogawa pays so much attention to Ippo, even though he is already retired. Takamura is, at heart, a papa's boy, if you will.

A smaller reason for Takamura's anger is also likely caused by the worry Ippo caused for Kamogawa. In the Bison fight, Takamura caused the same kind of worry because he got his shit completely beaten in. When Takamura realized that, he got angry with himself, so I think he projects the same kind of thing towards Ippo.

If Ippo returns, if Ippo tries to progress, he's going to have to become a lot more like Takamura and a lot less like himself. He's too submissive in his thinking and mannerisms, he's happy just to be included.

He needs ambition, he needs hunger, needs anger. He has to want his opponent beaten to death before anything else.

Some actually solid discussion in this chapter's comments, and here I am wondering if anyone's noticed how, lately, every second chapter or so has contained a crotch joke...

Takamura's assholeness aside, I think most of the reason he is being the way he is is that he wants people around him to not have false hope, I mean if he is coming back, he is coming back. He doesn't want people to wait or be expectant of him.

@kayriel That's it yes. He doesn't want "the title". He just want "to show the coach that his training is right". It's not enough. Not in the world champ road. Ippo was mistaken since the beggining. It's not boxing as his coad say that make his boxing style work. It's winning a world championship that prove it.

Ippo believe that he betrayed his coach by not winning and he is not wrong; But not for the reason he thought. It wasn't because he was weak, but because he didn't have the right mindset.

The tiger do have the right mindset. And Coach want to show Ippo. Gonzalez to for that matter; going to Mexico will show what Takamura tried to say since the beggining : They are monsters.

I wonder if we're gonna see Martinez absolutely destroy Sendo, to the point where his career is done (like he did with Date). If that happens... that's something that would absolutely fire Ippo up and make him swear revenge, and get his ass back into the ring.

So basically it'll be like Rocky seeing Ivan Drago destroy Apollo.

I'd love to see that kind of development on Ippo, so far it seems like he's been somewhat afraid to have that killer instinct in the ring.

So.. basically Ippo was a puppet/machine who more or less moved according instincts and what he was told by the controller/Coach Kamogawa.
Now he's "evolving", starting to think for himself and learning strategies.
An analogy would be the hardware/brawn getting enough maintenance and the software/brain getting upgrades.

While Takamura doesn't believe in Ippo's comeback, it's still hard to tell what will happen.

I guess Morikawa just baited us.
The way things are looking, just like Takamura said, that "thing" is never coming.
And, fuck, just after he said that, Ippo goes in a trip to study more to become a better second.
Guess It'll be how Ippo turns out to be someone like Cus D'amato in the end.
