LOL i know Karen (or Karin) can also be a name in JP but it's hard to not think of the meme/stigma associated with it (i wonder how the JP side of the internet reacted to it, tho i wouldn't be surprised if other languages had their own word for it, tho without being told the 'meaning' i'd assume some ppl would name their kids to have a more 'westernized' sounding names depending)

Isn't Ito/Itou more of a 'last' /family name? Haven't heard it used as a a first , tho i guess it'd be impossible to know all names/uncommon ones

Totally fair question! Her given name is Ito (糸、いと), while the super common surname you're thinking of is Itou (伊藤、いとう). Japanese is pretty rigid with syllable length (i.e. the "o" sound in Itou is held exactly twice as long as in Ito), so Itou sounds audibly different from Ito, and the two would be distinguishable/recognizable as more typically a surname/given name. Unfortunately this doesn't always make it into translation, but ideally the surname should always be transliterated as Itou or Itō, and the given name as Ito.

This name actually made me think for a second that Karen, the name used in western countries, is borrowed from Japanese. Turns out nope, they're just two unrelated names that happened to sound the same

Yeah must be confusing if your name is a 'Word' in diff languages. Like Mimi can be a name but in Japan it would sound like you're saying "My name is Ear"

and "Ken" also being a name in the west and Japan too (tho usually the 'borrowed' names i've seen usually come from food or so to sell at restaurants or so lol , like musubi being an option on a menu)
