The Christmas Cake thing is a reference to Sociobiology wherein younger women are more fertile than older women (Risk of Genetic disorders start to increase in their twenties, possibly even earlier) so women who haven't gotten married before their 30's or so are perceived as having problems with their personality or are infertile.

The Christmas Cake thing might come from the idea that nobody really eats Christmas Cake and it just gets passed around or regifted.

This is more of a doujinshi type of manga, I'm pretty sure this is the author's style anyway. They seem to usually do rather short, characterized manga with simple backgrounds. Complaining about this work when you have read this far is rather redundant as well.
