What does the mother do, does she have other family, why aren't they there, what happened with the dad (did he die or did they break up), why is the daughter so prickly? I feel like if it goes the simple he becomes dad and the mom stays it will be underwhelming. I'm expecting the reason they broke up before to come up at least once.

The daughter's sadness about her mom getting together with someone else may be hinting to the dad being dead.
