If it is not a coincidence, i am not sure to understand Gabriel's actions: Maybe as he said first that Maou was missing, he sent them to get more fighting power so they would be useful enough for him.

For those finding strange for trials being done in a building which look like a church, while i highly doubt the artist is doing it for this reason, the architectural base and layout of churches comes from the buildings the romans used for trials.
