Yeah people are right, this airhead clueless character don’t see realistic or wholesome at all, and all the time I have or see a long-distance relationship come with a lot of trouble, you can distracted yourself but still, never the same and with a lot of problems.

Yes, I think he should have brought this up earlier, but if this is something he really wants to do/is a good opportunity, he's ultimately the one who makes the decision. They should be talking about their relationship and whether they want to continue long distance, not whether he is going or not, that's his choice.
