English is a germanic language after all. The older the english the more obvious it gets.

The way that the language is written, it feels you can hear some of the accent - that is, it feels like the words that developed into the Welsh? and northern English accents that exist now. The way that they pronounce "lond" for the modern "land", and "felauship" for the modern "fellowship", for example.

You're right there, @kazaddum - By the time Hawkwood was born, middle english was well established. A mix of germanic/viking languages from the nordic invasions a few centuries prior and old english. Hats off to HnG and HappyScans for going the extra mile for accuracy. Just reading that hurts the old noggin'!
