Katakana is basically how you spell out the (approximate) pronunciation of any foreign words. Though it was originally created for telegrams, I think. I've read whole sentences in katakana that I had to speak out loud just to figure out what language it was supposed to be. You'd have to know the names of the Greek letters to get the wolves' names.
