Helck is a great manga that got too convoluted for its own good. Expositions, dues ex machina moments, twists, contrived tension, lack of/repetitive character growth/plot developments all piled on top of the creative worldbuilding... and it all came toppling down. Seriously. There's no subtlety or nuance to be found. What's funny is how despite all that twists and turns, there are still some open plot lines in the end.
However, what's truly, truly unforgivable, is the random bonus slice-of-life, comedy chapters inbetween all the dramatic moments. Granted this isn't an issue if you're reading a physical copy, but there are still random goofy moments and damn do they take you out of your immersion. The chapters are also numbered quite randomly so you can't just ignore the decimal chapters, either. Blargh.
But those flaws are also what make Helck such an amazing fantasy story. When the plot starts rolling, it doesn't pull any of its punches and it is simply glorious. The initial setup was ingenious and thrilling, combined with the engaging fantasy setting - Helck is worth reading just for these alone. The other commentors aren't lying, they really are worth it. Yeah there are no stakes, but just the need to know how the intriguing conflict will be resolved is more than enough for so many to keep on trudging through. The theme is heavy, but also simple, endearing, and somehow light-hearted. Great for anyone who desires a golden ending even in the most tragic of stories.
Helck isn't a hit or a miss. It's a story full of HIT hits and eehhh misses. I recommend Helck, but it definitely isn't a must-read or anything. But once you do pick it up, there will be some parts that will stay in your mind forever. Lastly, just so you don't forget, Anne best girl.
