Some stories actually point this out as a literal "Prince your an idiot" moment and the king just tells his son to stfu and get married anyway or realizes that his son is a dumba** and just demotes him letting his other son take over.

Tho in most of these stories the commoner girl is usually the saintess or something equally bs like that somehow makes this girl just as important as the duke's daughter and somehow not bring about any political issues.
