Letting Alicia do her thing was fine, but he should've had a plan for when it failed. And frankly, Alicia did fail; the dipshit Prince only backed down because Mariana was willing to risk summary execution to get through to him.

This is a society where duels are a thing. After all, that's how Patricia and the Prince got away with burning Alicia's face in the first place.

Ragna has more and better options than (1) stand there like a lump or (2) blindly lash out.

I agree with a lot of what you said but we really don’t know if Alicia would have succeeded or not because Mariana stepped in before she even got to respond, and because Mariana stepped in we don’t even know if Ragna had a backup plan or not — he ended up not needing one. i.e. handwringing about whether or not he should have done something is meaningless because he ended up not needing to do anything in the first place. We’re arguing about a potential future that never happened.

Really do love trains in these kinds of stories. And it honestly doesn’t seem too out of place in terms of tech development either. Really the only missing tech so far I can think of would be guns, but that’s another can of worms that most authors don’t usually want to deal with.

Well I give the Prince points for conceding here. I still think he is an idiot but he is at least not actively "trying" to be malicious. That at least gives him a "chance" ... though I also assume he is not smart enough to utilize it.

Frankly, looks like he's just incredibly sheltered. When confronted with the reality of the situation by a witness that's not in his usual circle, he immediately conceded and admitted fault as graciously as his station allows him to. His intentions are good, but he's naive and (in part maliciously) ill informed. He needs to know how the world he's in actually works.

When he shown and resemblance of taking action, he stood there like a good dog because his wife told him so. This has nothing to do with Mariana, which is why I didn't comment on her. Ragna did what his fiancée asked him to do, because he respects her. Speaking as someone that's married, if I was confronted by someone else with whom I have a very personal problem, a problem about which I am far more informed than my spouse is, I ask my spouse to let me handle it, and my spouse ignores me and tries to do something about it, I'm looking into divorce proceedings as soon as the situation is resolved. If I can't trust my spouse in a situation like that, I can't trust them at all.

If my spouse really wants to help me out in situations like that, I appreciate the sentiment, and we can talk about what to do in the future after the present is taken care of.

I will say that, from what I remember, this is actually my main criticism of him while reading the WN. That is, that his mind always goes toward killing. He says it's just the way of the brave territory but he takes it too far. It's too much to insist that a school tournament match has to be a death battle, even when it's against his friend. It's his go-to course of action and he's way to willing to act on it. It honestly put me off of the novel a bit.
