the wn is very tropy, this chapter over there was actual the classic "crystal ball magic test" which breaks and mercury gets shocked because he has more magic because he ate the poison of monster meat
so we'll see how the manga handles the next trope

Because this happens IRL all the time; a manager or supervisor, hell even CEOs who have no clue who is not and just fires or promotes everyone based off arbitrary performance metrics.

That being said, it's also hard to determine how valuable someone is without some kind of standard, or inordinate amount of time watching an individual work.
