Historically in China in upper class society people refer to themselves in the third person when addressing someone of a different station. You see this often in Imperial court, where the Emperor his a third person title that only he alone is allowed to use to refer to himself. His subordinates/servants would also refer to themselves in third person as 'this slave', 'this retainer' etc etc. Now, on the other end, at the bottom end of the social ladder pompous/uncultured people also use very exaggerated/impolite third person self references to when talking. Think of the yankees you see in anime/manga, how they often use the word 'kisama' in their vocabulary. Refering to yourself as 'grandfather/ye' (very common in wuxia/xianxia) or da ye (great me) is essentially the Chinese equivalent.
