Has there been an explanation of the cultivation stages? I do know its similar to other Wuxia, but it would be nice with a chart.

@Recaso It seems to be less complicated than most xianxia (wuxia doesn't have cultivation stages, xianxia does).
(Pre) Foundation establishment - usually this is called qi condensation stage in other works but I went back and it doesn't seem the author actually gives a name to this sage, but it seems like most cultivators are stuck in this stage, especially if you're not part of a big sect. Remember all the cultivators in the outer sect and in the wilderness are all eager to gain foundation establishment, hence the technique that was revealed at the end of the last couple of chapters was such a big deal, instead of getting a foundation establishment pill or getting a demon core (both pretty much impossible for normal cultivators), you can just steal your cultivation from others.
Foundation Establishment This is quite a big deal in this work compared to a lot of other works where its normally just a stepping stage for the MC to power through. Not even all the inner sect disciples are Foundation Establishment. Seems like the first step to true immortality and a huge barrier to cross over in this work whereas in other works every young master is past foundation establishment.
Golden Core In other works there's usually a core cultivation stage after foundation establishment but doesn't seem to be the case here, or maybe there is and it'll be revealed as Little Mo gets there. The acting sect leader (Old grampa) is at Golden Core stage.
Nascent Soul Pretty rare and a big deal in this story.
Dao Seeking? We saw them talk about it this chapter, the stage after Nascent Soul. Nascent soul cultivators need to get to this stage to transcend into an upper realm, or maybe just the first step.

I just re-read everything and I think this nascent soul cultivator might have been the original cultivator that figured out cultivation and fought against the demons. It looks like he's been here sealing the Demon Saint for 1000 years so it could be that there's no new nascent soul cultivator in the last 1000 years aside from Mo Zun 12 years ago. Also I think the 'kid' is the Nascent Soul itself, with the old man the original body of the cultivator.

i've read someone comment that there are plenty cultivation stage after nascent soul . but it seems in this story nascent is like the penultimate stage and the ancient cultivator is also only that stage even though he guard the seal to highest demon

Also things getting more interesting since high ranking demon not only have reasoning but also sensibilty as the Demon saint doesnt seem eager start a war with human again.
(but of course there are hot blooded people in both human and demon that want war)

@zuflis11 Different stories have different variations on stages past Nascent Soul. A lot of the web novels go way past Nascent Soul with many stages afterwards as the MC ascends to higher tier realms. Other stories Nascent Soul seems to be the limit of their setting, although there might be higher stages the story doesn't involve them. So it really depends on whether the author wants to keep the MC and setting self-contained within this realm or if he wants to expand further, but that can come way later since MC is still a long ways off.

@robotcat hmm, so cultivation stage is not set on stone? just a term that any author can interpret however strong it is according to their imagination?
interesting, as long as there's enough explanation and maybe adding some depth per stage, unlike some manhua that like to give many stage and somehow MC keep breaking thru like it was nothing because powercreep

@zuflis11 cultivation is based on Taoism/Daoism as well as Chinese ascetism. Er Gen's web novels got the stages popularized in the web novel sphere and it spread. I think there are older novels with golden core stages and nascent soul (yuan ying) but the whole qi condensation/foundation/core cultivation/gold core/nascent soul stage setup seems to be mostly due to Er Gen's web novels, and its what a lot of influenced authors work with nowadays because its so popular and due to its roots in traditional Daoism its kind of accepted to be able to be used as a general concept, like the Tolkien races in western fantasy.
