Alright, this is too stupid. If you look at any rebellion or insurrection that gets crushed, the leaders are hanged. The citizens of the empire would be furious that the beast-folk that trampled over the elven locals were let off so easily. I hate the "bad guy joins good guys" trope, as it's almost always poorly done and I still dislike the bad guy because we don't know anything about him other than he did shitty things.

Edit: I notice that some people refer to the American treatment of the Germans post-WW2. This ignores the fact that the Americans also aided in executing German war criminals and mainly took technicians and specialists. There was no desire to make Adolf Hitler a cabinet member.

@DaDingo:
Well, here's first introduction of the "retainer"
https://mangadex.org/chapter/1217892/9

I believe the author ignores previous portrayal of the character for the sake of... I don't know? Making MC look clever? Doesn't seem to be very convincing...

His thinking is similar to Cao Cao, Cao Cao also often uses tactics like this to recruit enemy generals & in the end he succeeded in controlling China.

As much as i hate this development, this is not a uncommon tactic in history, dallos is a skilled tactician and warrior, killing him when you can control him in a situation where you NEED soldiers isn't unheard of, but it's also not a great choice either, if they weren't needing soldiers this wouldn't make sense (and next volume will show that he's planning ahead if i read it right).

What however this manga failed to do (not sure on the novel, this is my knowledge of military history) is point out that dallos and his men are now essentially permanent prisoners of war/war slaves aka meaning they are on a tight leash, if dallos rebels or runs away, his men and their families will be eradicated and vice versa, not only that but by the mc showing his ability dallos now knows that in a 1 on 1 fight, he would lose, so basically, the mc is willing to overlook a few things and give dallos a chance to fix some of his mistakes, and dallos now has to worry that if he messes up, him and his soldiers are all in for a fate worse than death.

Someone pointed out cao cao, this is actually similar to other soldiers from the three kingdoms era, such as gan ning of the wu kingdom, a former pirate that was pacified into military service, the flip side of this was lu bu, a man who tried to pull this but cao cao remembered he had betrayed his former master and had him executed, the difference here is dallos knows he can't win, so he either does his job or accepts execution, and the mc is being nice only because him and his men are going to have to work their asses off to fix the bs they caused in the first place.

by brilliant tactician you mean having his men charge a few hundred meters whilst wearing armor and not in formation into stakes and into a hail of arrows a great tactic then I worry for the soldiers

Wow. The enemy commander have a side spot for his soldier? Look like mc is using them as hostages to control him.

i guess we're just gonna ignore the fact that he was raping and murdering his way through the entire peninsula and brought it to the brink of destruction with his retardation leading to mass starvation and a ruined economy and who knows how many deaths. no consequences at all...
This seems like such a 180 on the merc leader's personality. He seemed to be an asshole murdering and pillaging. He was shown to be an abusive ruler. Who can say he wouldn't one day decide he doesn't care about his men? Or if he does try to pull a coup, I would assume one of the first things he would do along with securing key positions around the country would be to send people to save the hostages. Unless the MC enslaves the hostages and makes it so they die when he does or some BS like that, there would still be some way that merc leader's betrayal could succeed.
He SO did not deserve the "redemption" he got when he's such a scumabg. Yeah there were talks of a "collar" and such but at the end of the day he will have a high ranking position and a massive ammount of influence. This seemed very forced and i really didn't like that his head didn't roll for how an unlikable character he was.

Big sigh.
The Empire requires COMPETENT generals. And the Emperor just captured one. The reason to his betrayal was the lack of payment. The Emperor says he will pay it.

The mercenary commander may be a tyrant to the commoners, but he has to have some form of camaraderie to his core mercenary group. Otherwise he wouldn't be able to be a mercenary commander for long.

Because we live in modern times, where majority of us live sheltered lives, we often forget that opportunistic pragmatism often defeats pure morality.

MC used the carrot and stick approach. Carrot wasn't sufficient, so he had to wield the stick.
