Hard to feel too bad for her, but she is a kid at the end of the day.

Edit: I mean that she's being horrible, but I cant hold it against her too much since she's a kid with trauma.

I disagree, everything she did was pretty understandable if you take things from her POV.
Not right but understandable. She was ridiculed and excluded before, she didn't want to be ridiculed and excluded now.
She though Koharu was excluding her and she acted uppon her fears and excluded Koharu. When she noticed she traded a real friend for fake friends and a place higher in the middleschool social hierarchy, it was too late, she had to keep the facade going.

It's almost a text-book example of a bullied kid turing into the bully to avoid further bullying.

My God THIS SO HARD!!! It's the same with her "lackies". They clearly DO seem to think she's going overboard, but it's part of that defense mechanism of falling in line and "going with the flow" lest you become a target as well. Like a LOT if not ALL of this is basic MS to HS stuff that you look back on with ALL KINDS OF FEELINGS(delivering or receiving end, bystander, etc.). The series is all about exploring these things from the mindset of someone who already KNOWS a lot of this shit and how there's still time to fix it and people ESPECIALLY KIDS deserve a chance to do so. It's why Koharu praises Yuuko so much in her redemption moment because she started to better herself so early when it took her a damn near lifetime and a retry to get going.

So the real reason is still not shown. She has started taking long breaks from school unbeknownst to this bitch so we are still not introduced to the real culprit. This doesn't, in any shape or form, lighten the bitch's involvement however.
Long breaks from school unbeknownst to this bitch, according to this bitch. This bitch doesn't see herself as having done anything wrong, why would she connect her own actions to any harm done to koharu? Unreliable narrator at its finest

Just a reminder that all this is still during middle school, which means despite hozue's little realization in this chapter she still decided to talk down to her when she saw koharu got into the same high school back in ch 34: https://mangadex.org/chapter/4df9236b-34c5-49e2-b92e-19a4b1d04533/12
That means despite realizing how useless her facade was she still decided to keep it up and cut koharu off. Make of that what you will.

.... Actually that's... A pretty good point. Is she actually just a bastard, or is she just a stubborn git?

Find out next on Koharu Ball Z!

Oh, the lackeys actually took part in this.
I thought they're just trying to "survive" by latching to Hozue, but they're actually worse. They're her fucking enabler, albeit unintentionally.
I'll give them the benefit of doubt, like maybe they feel suffocated having to suck up to Koharu, but goddamn, they don't need to denounce her right in the middle of the class, man.
And their existence as lackeys also the one that keeps Hozue alpha bs going, because she took them as the tangible result that what she's doing is working.
Without them clinging, she'd prolly run out of steam sooner and maybe, just maybe, reconciled with Koharu before Midschool end.
But with them existing, reconciling would just destroy everything that she built for. Sunk cost fallacy, really.

My school days weren't the best, but I'm damn thankful that I am a guy, and that I grew up in the outskirts of the city area. Hearing about pre/teen girls cliques and mind game bullshit like these from my sister and mangas, sounds like a terrible experience all around.

She's partially responsible. Hozue basically excommunicated Koharu with zero explanation. Getting your closest friendship broken can and will take a toll to your mental health, especially if youre a socially awkward middle schooler.
Based on previous flashbacks also, I'm guessing Hozue's two followers did some bullying/harassment to Koharu. Then Koharu just completely broke after the highschool entrance exam.
Yeah that would leave someone with some heavy scars. But with the new information added in these new chapters it’s shown that Koharu, while being awkward, was still close to others. Or could at least talk to others.

I also feel like we were told that the lackies don’t do anything aside from just standing next to Hozue while she intimidated people.

I don’t know. It just seems like we were told/heavily hinted this was the big thing that destroyed Koharus life with how she reacted to Hozue. But then it’s hinted as not with Hozue comments kind of hinting something else was affecting Koharu. It just seems weird that there could be anything else when this seems like the big moment but also feels so small.

We can also see Hozue + lackeys on the very first page of this manga https://mangadex.org/chapter/b1d79324-f4e8-4a1a-80fd-07299734a6d3/1
I think Hozue's downfall also happened in the original manga after her classmates realized they can just ignore, like, what can she do besides glaring? I know she's going to get her redemption arc but I hope she touches bottom before that so she realizes how much of a prick she's been so far.

because that moment destroyed the status quo and Hozue also pretty much trampled on the other girls, so pretty much what happened nobody wanted to cross her so they stopped talking to Koharu while she tried to fix her relationship only to be treated like crap by Hozue and her lackeys that highly probably talked smack about Koharu with the classmates... in MS she escaped isolation but still thanks to the lover of her mom she tried one last time for HS where we know it got shutdown from day 2. (worse of all, if she remember the 3 together in HS, she probably went shut-in on 1st year as they already separated and we noticed she mentions it's her 1st culture festival here)

Why does their have to be a culprit? She struggled to fit in in class and lost her best friend for no discernable reason. Maybe she just decided going to class was more trouble than it was worth. I think that's a whole lot more typical than some innately evil monster targeting her and making her life hell for fun. It also would fit more with the story I think, which seems to be making the point that everyone has their own circumstances that lead them to act how they do and if you try and understand where their coming from you can start to form connections

What exactly did people expect from this kind of story ? This is a light heart story not mess up like other bully stories.
What happened in her past ? Because is this enough to make mc quit school ? I feel like something missing or this is it.
Ha ha ha, my mind was on that manga about the insane girl who this baseball player starts dating. If I recall, redemption arcs in that manga include "That time she sicked criminal punks to rape a girl who bullied her" and then ends up with one of her male friends she guilted into doing the raping going to jail for her.

Overall, different levels of interpersonal conflict and different stories. The level of bullying and conflict in this manga would fit perfectly fine in a Folkist play about people in a community having conflict and then resolving their issues, coming back together. The other is basically your standard extremely negative soap opera.
