wonder why this failed but similar gender bending ninja like ayakashi triangle was a success. i mean besides the star power of yabuki's To Love Ru. i feel like this one had potential.
It's really quite simple: it refuses to legitimately engage with its own premise. Like in general Hikaru should be learning femininity and showing character development. Instead he sucks it out like a sponge. It's just bad writing.
Ayakashi Triangle, in comparison, has its protagonist cone to terms with femininity. She engages with her girlhood, evolves her relationship with her partner, has her partner fight and participate in the plot, and ultimately stays a girl in the end.
To give specific examples for this one: Hikaru doesn't learn or engage outside one off gags, it's all physical "comedy", the main girl is treated like a prize for masculinity, the mothers are not respected as women, the one character with ANY sort of introspection (Kaede) is reduced to sex, the dog exists and also serves to reduce kunochis as men, etc.
It's a laundry list of bad writing. The only decent writing was Kaede and we're all convinced it happened accidentally.
