where in the hell did they found this designer? not only she acts like "i've worked on a lot of hits so i know better", but the director as well - "who need original design from author, its not popular in our days, ive directed a lot of hits, so i know better" - what the fuck? who even hired them? if it wasnt popular than manga wont sell and became a hit and anime adaptation would've been out of the picture! They are doing anime adaptation BECAUSE MANGA AND ITS ART ARE POPULAR. As manga reader i would've hated anime adaptation that looks nothing alike as manga - it's fans most horrible nightmare. And they saying that they are pro's? Pro's my ass.
But - i guess THIS is based on Seo own expirience in anime adaptation (bcs we all know for example in what shit movie makers could transform great book, so i think manga as well is the case).

Chief character designer isnt wrong though. In some cases, the art of the manga can really skewed, making animation look weird. This can be especially true since the mangaka in question is a selftaught, high schooler, with probably minimal experience shaping proper skeletons. The designer looks pissed, but I think she really welcomes the challenge of trying to mimic someone's art while reforming it into the necessary structure for beautiful animation. The best of art comes with heavy constraint pushing the artist to their limit.

@Jmann Almost all anime adaptations do not really look like the manga if you pay close attention, especially when it comes to romcoms and stuff like that, where almost all anime looks the same. Just look at Kanojo, Okarishimasu; it looks close but not quite like the manga. That's probably what they are referring to.

I always thought it happens because it is costly to try to resemble the original art as close as possible, but now considering the point they made (it is more easy to sell), it may not be far off to consider that some artstyles are just more appealing.

@LouisTheLuis you confusing CHEAP and DIFFERENT. And I can tell the differences between those two. And they pointed out, that THIS is not some cheap anime, when Love Letter - is. In cheap - year, they just dont bother to add details, animations, background etc. And yeah, sometimes details even better in anime but they have the style of the original.
Just for the example - Kimetsu no Yaiba - manga artstyle is not that good, bcs of no experience from author, but anime preserve the style and rise it above.
On other hand - Black Clover - character design looks a like and Studio Parrot have tons of experience in shonen, but anime adaptation is just cheap piece of shit. Or another example - Tokyo Ghoul - first two seasons from Parrot was greatly animated. And then seasons 3 and 4 - cheap pieces of shit. Etc. I hope you've got my point. You cant do exactly the same as author just bcs is just impossible for different people to draw the same, BUT - you can do as close to the original as you could, to preserve original style that all fans loves, you can improve it, by adding details, you can do worse, by doing poor and cheap work without enough details, BUT YOU CANT DO TOTALLY DIFFERENT CHARACTERS JUST BCS ITS MORE POPULAR IN OUR DAYS THAT MEN NOT MUSCULAR LIKE IN ORIGINAL THEY NEED TO BE MORE SEXY.
The whole point of remarks - that this characters couldn't swing swords with this body build, and this kind of realism I guess is what driven the author and what's fans appreciate (beside the story). At least that's my point of view. I wouldn't want to watch anime where characters looks totally different from manga. Death note shitty adaptation with black L was enough for me... 🤦🏻‍♂️

Well, if they don't care about the original manga, why don't they do an original anime instead? xD

@Jmann I don't think the animator is bad. She's just a bit stubborn. It's possible that all her work before come from sources that have artstyle closer to the mainstream artstyle. So she have a huge bias toward said style. I'd bet that Shimakaze will soon realize that her unique artstyle won't look good in animation and they would settle with a middle ground style that keep both the arstistic intergrity and still hit close to mainstream
