I feel that there's a localization issue here. I don't think the hero is asking the female warrior to wear it considering the armour is only for men. Maybe it's cause the Japanese language tends to drop the pronouns.

Yeah, she simply says 着れるか!?, which can mean either "Are [you/me] wearing that"? But even in context, I think she still thinks in the first panel that he's asking her to wear it. She only finds out that it's male-only in the third panel after all. The only possible missing part of the joke in translation is that the hero might be misinterpreting her objection. He might've thinking that she's objecting to him wear it when she was actually objecting her wear it.
