@krutou I know you're jesting but I wouldn't put common sense and japan in the same sentence without any form of negation somewhere.

This kinda starts off a bit annoying with the book obsession going a little far before its reined in by the author getting more serious with the plot. The side characters are very loveable and I found myself drawn to them more than the MC.

One of the major issues that happens in the manga isnt really explained properly I think. As it becomes a major facet of the later story I'd like it properly expanded on but I'd guess that'd happen in the web novel. Though I'm not expecting much excitement from the world building.

Overall an enjoyable manga with cute art and a solid story.

The level of the MC's competence changes in absurd ways as this story progresses.

the fact that they are like 6 years old is so mega unbelievable. why didnt the author just make them like 9?

Good manga, 9.5/10, rounded down.

The scope of worldbuilding in "Ascendance of a Bookworm" is what every fantasy manga should strive for.
It kinda fails in the details - for example, the german words used for things like spells and wands are pretty haphazard - but the scope of it is proper.
This is an alien world, so the plants and animals are alien. Customs are a bit alien, like
because magic exists, nobles that meet formally might bless each-other with real magic. Nobles are on top because they can use magic, and magic is required to keep monsters out of cities, so peasant rebellions are basically doomed to fail. Accordingly, nobles sort themselves after how much magic ability they have; this is only logical.
Refreshingly novel, and it feels like seeing a slightly alien society, like you get more out of reading this than some cliché fantasy setting.

Note that this is only the first manga series of five or so. Several are in progress at once, with different artists. Some of the later ones update slowly or not at all, but the light novel series is finished, so it makes sense to read the manga to where progress stops, and then just jump into the books, by whatever means.
(Which is probably not buying, because there's like 35 books and it'd cost you a small fortune. I simply petitioned nearby libraries into getting the book series until one of them caved.)

though if someone can afford it, i would absolutely recommend to buy this (just to support the author). Personally i have both the digital and printed version.
Since you seem to not have read all the novels, i won´t go into spoilers. But lets just say the magic is required for waaaay more than just keeping monsters at bay. And the correlation between magic and religion ties heavily into the central conflict of the entire series. So you can look forward to a bunch more fascinating world building.

i would say it´s less her competence that changes and more that the applicability of her knowledge and values more and more comes into conflict with this worlds standards. It´s actually the only isekai i can think of where the other world factor amounts to more than just food and/or board games outside the central theme (which is books in this case).

Though this reply might be a tad late, could you explain the issue?

Setting is great, but the MC is so lame. Makes the worst decisions ever.

How is this an isekai if she doesn't hold the simplest common sense from modern Japan? And what's up with that final chapter Deus Ex Machina?

3/10 IGN
deus ex machina is something that comes out of nowhere. Her magic breaking out was long foreshadowed.

Aight, this mc makes me feel pain on the inside at times, but she's not terrible, just uninformed about the world around her.
which is absolutely understandable on account of this being a different world. Considering that, her depiction is way more realistic than most other isekai with brainless op protagonists.

the mc is uhhhh act like a very spoiled person she's like some antagonist that everyone hated from another story
considering the difference in life quality between modern day Japan and this pseudo medieval world in combination with the fact that she finds herself in the body of a 5 y/o (which impacts her mind) i do not fault her for acting spoiled.

People adapt to different life quality quite fast actually - similar things happened during times of conflict when the cities were turned into ruins and the people living in them got used to living without all previously available amenities. I can guarantee you that within a year you'd make just fine medieval peasant.
The book thing is... I probably will read the manga eventually since people reccomend it so much - but boy oh boy - it's a struggle to finish early chapters. So far she's one of the most unlikable mc's I've seen - complains all the time, is obsessed with a useless hobby (in her situation) while her family tries to avoid starvation, can't handle butchering of animals (I've never seen anyone overreact to this degree while seeing an animal being killed - you can't even blame it on big city life - I've seen at least a dozen different critters being turned into a mush by cars - a clean cut is less disgusting).
Also - her teaching the native population how to not waste food is ridiculous - medieval people actually almost never wasted food (except for some abrahamic religions sometimes blood was left unused) - the only way this could happen would be if the preparation necessary to make it viable for human consumption was quite complex and involved fermentation for example.
I don't think those are some extreme problems that should make me so angry - but they did for some reason - I guess I might be getting too old for manga since those flaws are present and oftenwise much worse in most works. Eh - such is life.

yeah, i don´t think i ever read a (fantasy) novel that got the medieval life correct. It´s always the same trope of dirty dumb peasants etc.. I wonder if there is a reason for that, like one famous author doing it wrong in the past and everyone since just copying them.
As for her Book obsession, that´s basically addict behavior. Part of the narrative of this story is her getting more relaxed in this over time, even if not growing out of it completely. So does her ability to adapt to her new life.
I don´t think its a question of getting too old but rather of gaining experience in reading many things. Same goes for writing as well. I actually prefer the later books in this series since you can see how the author developed her skill over time while writing the thing.
