No, she didn't starve him. As said in the chapter, they also receive the "Graces from the gods", which is the leftovers from the blue priests.
What she brought here was kind of a "bonus" food, on top of the normal food they get.

@daedalron she technically didn't withdraw any food that he normally would've gotten, but iirc they don't always get food right? Bc sometimes there are no leftovers? Isn't that why the girls in the orphanage were starving?

I mean, do I think all kids should be given food? Yes. But in this scenario do I also think it's good incentive? Yes.

I'm sure they'll learn by the next time that freeloaders go hungry

So I think from our modern sensibilities, yes she did starve them. But a few things to consider. The society that Myne now lives in isn't our modern one. Allowing these kids to starve is sadly the norm for the church and for society. If she didn't get involved at all they would continue to starve. This is point 1.

Point 2 is that she's also trying to help them better themselves as a whole. Simply feeding everyone would better them hopefully, but she also identified that some simply didn't work at all and expected the same food as everyone since that's how God's Grace works. She instead made sure to establish a sense of trust among everyone that hard word would be rewarded, but not working would not be. She also made sure to call it a reward in receiving food and not a punishment when not receiving food. The goal here seems to be to teach them the value of hard work as well as a potential life skill since her end goal is to have them make paper.

Ethically it's a complicated issue for us now when we consider child labor laws and basic human rights. But the culture is different and she is pushing some of her own beliefs aside to adapt to this culture.

Now none of this makes Myne a saint. I mean, she just wants her books guilt free. But she also is better than the Head Priest who doesn't exactly give a darn about anyone else besides himself.

Just my two copper

@yannickq The reason they're starving is because Gods' grace must be distributed among them, which limits the amount they'll get. Those kid'll surely still get some, moreso that the kids that are rewarded would likely spare their share to help their friends. They won't die.

@flameshadowwolf Does that boy look starving to you, huh? He had energy to spare, to be rude, mouth off, shout, run, and slam the doors. Those kids had lived, for a while, with no director or supervision, no rules or obligations, that is, so some of them would have developed twisted personalities. What Main is doing is absolutely the most effective and cost efficient way of dealing with them. It's not like she would have the time or luxury for anything more than that. Fortunately the story is fluffy enough that a brat like that was the worst of them.

@ksen tomato cover? I think someone said its a festival.

@flameshadowwolf if you can yell like that, you very much alive.

Note that Myne want to make a paper factory in the orphanage, so I think this is a good method to teach them the meaning of hard work & reward.

I mean @nunally @Kaarme, the boy was rude but the whole thing kinda stinks of capitalism propaganda. Like the argument that homeless people should just work harder to get a higher standard of living.

I might be wrong but the whole "orphans better work hard so they don't starve is kinda iffy to me"

@Kaiser92 lol, it's been as long as all the other chapters have taken. It's been nice to look forward to the 1st of every month for a chapter.

@flameshadowwolf there's a difference between the homeless and an orphan. did you not learn the value of money from your parents? to counter, your statement would imply that it's socialist propaganda that you would get free stuff for doing nothing. like myne said, this was a reward - not grace. those kids would still get the same amount of food they would have gotten if everyone did no work.
