@thefabulouspotato for one, it's cleaner. Slate pencils dirty your hands and you have to dirty a rag to clean. In many points in the earlier parts of the novel, Myne uses her sleeve to clean the slate. Scratching the wax is cleaner and neater, so it's more proper for high-level businessmen and noble's servants. Myne also needs money as the orphanage director, she had to buy clothes for all the orphans so they could go to the forest, plus pots and utensils for her own kitchen, pay for her assistants... She needed money, and Benno wished to buy another novelty product from her, so she had to produce something that would be better than slates but also cheaper than paper and ink.

@thefabulouspotato wax is much more economical, yes, depending on where you live anyway. Chalk has to be mined from the earth and then transported by cart or boat from wherever is was mined from, so naturally the further you live from a calk mine the more expensive it's going to be. Realistically they would have been using charcoal anyway, but, as someone else pointed out, using and carrying around charcoal or calk sticks can get quite messy. But the main reason people used Wax tablets in ye olden times was that both charcoal and chalk run out. The kind of people who used wax tablets had jobs that required them to make small calculations and/or notes all day long, and often while away from any desk or office that might have spare writing implements (builders, merchants, dockmasters, ect). if your doing that kind of work it's much more convenient to carry one wax plate, you have to refill maybe once every week or two, then luge around a sack full of calk/charol sticks on your hip everyday; half of which will probably be broken anyway because that damned cabbage farmer always, ALWAYS, bumps into you with that half blind donkey of his every time he brings his crop to market.

Ah the funny interactions between Wilma and Fran. I wonder how many people overlooked a concerned looking Fran on page 21, where he's shaking and biting his finger.

Backstory spoilers:
Wilma has a case and androphobia (fear of men).
Fran has a case of gynophobia (fear of women).
Both due to things in their backstory, of a noble taking advantage of them.
Wilma was just a close call but not so for a young Fran.

It’s made of wax so they are basically carving into it and when they want to erase it, they just smooth it out. This way they save on the cost of chalk and wax is used for everyday life so they can easily replace it since its common and cheap

The wax writing board only need replace the wax after few months, is cheaper(on the long run) that all the alternatives, is cleaner and cam be decorated to a luxurious item degree.
It had beam a time since a read but to what i remember they give tanks to the gods(glico+dogueza) ad it was supposed to the "teachers" pray together . So they are thanking the teachers for the knowledge and the gods for allow this meting, basically the orphans learn to be thankful to the gods for being alive and pray(pray to thank and not to request) to the gods for each happy moment.
The WN is divided on Parts Before anything and the adaptations are following this to great extent
PART 1 / WN 77 chapters /LN 3 Vol / Anime S1
PART 2 / WN 94(78-172) / LN 4(4-7) / Anime S2-3(the Season 2 covered the LN vol 4 and 5)/Today manga chapter correspond to WN 95 and 96 so we are 19% of the PART 2 and 14% off all five parts
PART 3 / WN 104(173-277) / LN 5(8-12)(Vol 11 is the latest available in english)
PART 4 / WN 186(274-460) / LN 9(13-21)
PART 5 / WN 216(461-677) / LN 4*(22-25...)(LN ongoing)
there is 2 Vol of LN that collect side story's from the later parts but they are not available in english.
The author had manifest intention to make more small Rosemyne centered story's afther finish the main story LN serialization but actively denied make a PART6.
with 23 released chapters Hannerore fifth year is a ongoing spin-off But the author is giving priority to the LN release. It takes place after part 5 ending but is not a sequel. The main protagonist is a character introduced on Part 4 and although we see Rosemyne sometimes she is not a direct agent on this story plot

@Isshou thx for that backstory, that explains why Fran is shaking and Wilma flinching. I thought Fran was holding his laughter.

so, writable and erasable. basically the same thing as slateboard. not to mention you need to regularly replace the wax and the board would be unusable during the process. meanwhile, you can just grab a new slate whenever you need them
This way they save on the cost of chalk and wax is used for everyday life so they can easily replace it since its common and cheap
slate is cheap, although wax is probably cheaper. they also used ink prior to this so doubt money is a problem in the first place.

What are you talking about? Ink is hella expensive. A small bottle costs 4 silvers and Myne’s family is lucky enough to see medium sized coppers for their work. Remember when Myne was trying to get her mother and sister to work on the hair ornaments and paid them in 2 medium coppers? Ink costs 400 of them.

No matter how cheap slates are their pens are not as they are consumable and have to be replaced. When myne got her slate from Otto, she used it constantly and her family stopped buying her new pens because that was a useless expense for them. Wax on the other hand is not. Everyone makes wax because they need it for basic living thus making it a necessity that won’t cost much.

The only one who is rich is Myne and all of her profits go to making more plant paper and books. The wax notepads are made once and are cheaply refilled since the board is wax and can be smoothed out to be erased and the pen is basically a stencil that draws into it without getting dull or anything and would last much longer than a slate pen.

here they use ink and board, and yeah, it's expensive. that why even if the chalk was a bit expensive, it would be marginal at best
and sorry for being an ESL, i thought slate was the pen
