@kleiner I've heard that public displays of affection are frowned upon in Japan.
Another bit, that I'm not completely sure is true, so treat it as pure hearsay, is that to japanese people, if a couple is able to display their affection in public strongly, they kind of assume that said couple is sexually active. Mind you, I have absolutely no clue if there's any truth to this one, it's only something I've heard somewhere, it could be total BS.

Well, current japan, especially in big cities, is more tolerant to the affection of love, with the exception of older generation in the 40s usually. Showing affection like holding hand/arm, hugging, kissing to cheek, etc are usually tolerated in public places.

Kissing or even french kissing (in public places) on the other hand, unfortunately are still viewed as an uncouth and uncommon thing (as most asian countries do). Well, in the end, as the society progress (with japanese people are more tolerant to the western culture), I guess in time kissing will be commonly accepted

@fdmz French kissing in public is still viewed as uncouth even in America. I rarely see people who do it, and when they do, most people think that they should go get a room or something instead of doing it out in the open. But regular pecks/kisses on the lips are fine.
