That's the author lol. A lot of these authors can't accept that they are wrote a highschool love story, and have to inject it with pure literature pretentiousness. I mean this is about a boy who puts a girl's makeup on for her lol, but the author is trying to turn it into something more like No Longer Human or Norwegian Wood.

@Mortaze The way that I read it was that he didn't. He had said oh, I know the "real" you is serious at work. You don't have to go out with so many guys. You don't have to be ostracized by the other girls at school. If you just show your "real" self, the serious, hard-working self, then you'll be accepted.

This is chapter 71. Kobayakawa wanted to say that the part of her personality that he approved of was the "real" her while all the other parts that he didn't like were not "real". She specifically tells him that's stupid. At least, that's how I read it.
