Can verify that large Spanish mackerel are absolutely delicious. We can catch them here - usually we're going for yellowtail, tuna or Dorado, but leftover Spanish mackerel bait can absolutely be used. I've never done the psychopath shinkei-jime thing on them but they're plenty good enough grilled with olive oil and garlic. So fatty.

Damn, makes me want to start fishing again but the weather here is pretty random. Thanks for the chapter!

Nothing more fun than stabbing a fish in the brain and then ramming rod/cable into the fish spine
It's much less psychopathic than it sounds. Stabbing the fish on the brain instantly kill them and considered to be the fastest and most humane way to kill a fish. It's the same way used to kill animals like frogs in laboratory setting. Then you put wire through their spinal column to stop them from involuntary twitching, because even after death some animals can still do involuntary twitches (you can see how animals like snake can still wriggles after you decapitate them, you won't say that snake is still alive after you decapitate it, don't you), and it changes the flavor of the meat. Ikejime is generally used to keep the fish tastes good if it need to be processed later (like if you catch it on a boat and want to eat or sell it on land hours later).

It's also used to create texture for the fish

For anyone else who wants more detail check out The Mind of a Chef ( David Chang episode)
