Just remembering about how 4chan never fail to track down Shia Labeouf's flags makes me certain that they will probably be able to track down Light as well... so how do you think they will be able to?

For the sake of the argument let's just say that L doesn't exist and this takes place in the modern day where Light finds criminals through the internet and news channels.

They would probably take many of the same steps, including field agents, but end up catching Light/Kira in a fraction of the time.
Weaponized collective autism is terrifying to behold.

Was Light even stated to be fluent in any language other than Japanese? English maybe?

Unless, of course, Light uses the time-tested method:

They only found the flags because Shia is famous and someone posted on social media where he was. With the Death Note, they don't have any clues about where the owner lives.
There's almost no chance they could find Light unless it's someone with 200 IQ who would tell the whole world who they are.
Unlike the government who could track them down within a day.

Only pick local targets? They know where to look.
Don't pick local targets? It's even easier to find you since they can just check their thousands of petabytes of internet traffic logs and see the only person that searched for all of the targets.
