Kinda surprised the TL notes didn't include anything about the "dumplings over flowers" on page 11. The original probably said 花より団子. Hana yori Dango is an idiom meaning function over form or, in other words, working well is more important than looking good. There was also a manga/anime/tv drama called 花より男子 where the "Dango" refers to boys instead of the confection. In this case Chihiro is saying that even if Kenta didn't follow the traditional recipe exactly, the fact that they got to enjoy good homemade dango was more important.

Dango isn't common where I live, so it took me over 20 years to find out that I did in fact like dango, if it's well made.

i'm sure there's ways to make a ver of it if you had the right ingredients but i can imagine it being hit or miss if you're not as 'passionate' about food the same way kenta is (although i prefer mochi ice cream versus mochi on its own but i haven't had it 'fresh' either tho asian desserts for me growing up can be hit or miss depending)
