Damn it was almost as if the intent hurt her worse than the slap itself

I don't blame Shuu, though.
Nothing is scarier than losing the kid you're taking care of. The absolute fear of them getting hurt or kidnapped, and the 500 worst case scenarios running through your head is enough to drive you crazy. Honestly, kudos to him for not breaking down and scolding her loudly in public.

Yes, I fangirl whenever I QC this manga

On another note, I totally understand and get why Shuu acted that way. Just like what @/sakuchu said, it's scary.

this manga is precious

also, i doubt shuu-kun actually hurt chiho. chiho got hurt because shuu-kun got mad at her instead of praising her for catching fukumen, though im sure y'all can understand why shuu-kun got mad

On a serious note, don't hit kids. NEVER HIT KIDS. Do not punish kids for their accidents. Educate them. Be firm in this instance.

"Do NOT ever run off without me. You are a child. Someone could have taken you. There are people that do bad things. You being small and a child are easy targets. Next time something like this happens, ask an adult for help."

Seriously. Educate them. It's fine to be angry and worried but give it a minute and chill out. Make your point.

Silence, we must destroy their little bones so they know not to run, how else will their feeble little minds understand such complex concepts such as "Don't fucking walk around in place you don't know eh?"

@RangoBongo There are enough shit parents as it is. Physical abuse is archaic. Treat the kid like an equal.

I can tell you're a child

Don't hit the kid imo. Just made them lose something precious (could be materials/privileges) to themself then explain the talk. Since they would get so full of themself when they started crying, they would just couldn't care less about anything and hated you instead.

You ppl really think Shuu hits her hard eh
It's just a very gentle slap, to warn her not to do this kind of thing again
And Chiho crying is not because she got hurt by that slap, but because Shuu is angry with her, since this is the first time Shuu angry with her IIRC

People be mad at him like he just did a hook and an uppercut on Chiho or something. He already taught her before that she shouldn't run off alone. Chiho cried because she was shocked when he slap her eventhough she expect him to praise her. Plus wouldn't "ask for adult help" advice contradict with the "Dont talk to stranger".

Yes, don't hit kids. But then again, saying you should just talk to kids at an eye level isn't completely realistic. Kids aren't adults. It sounds like a good thing to say you should try to talk to kids at an equal level to have them learn to be mature, but do you really think an impulsive and immature kid still in kindergarten to take your words as seriously as you make them out to be? Most kids will not learn unless they recognize an outcome or consequence of their mistakes or at least the dept of it. Gently slapping Chiho on the cheek is a sign to show that Sakaguchi is severely disappointed in Chiho for going off on her own and getting lost again. If he just told her off again, she'd either just take it with a grain of salt or forget about it. Kids are forgetful and impulsive. Even if you say Chiho is innocent here, she dismissed Sakaguchi's permission and went off on her own.

Obviously the lesson isn't to imply that you can beat your kids, but physical discipline is an effective way to have a child learn consequence. Verbal punishment doesn't often work on kids, physical punishment can be more impactful. Obviously, don't fucking punch a kid across the face with your full strength, but a light tap to the arm, face, calve, or just a pinch is fair punishment. Even then, at least in this case it's practically just contact and the message was clearly received.
