As Vtuber fan, I hate when this happens. I still remember when Hololive member graduate or retired. Especially Coco and Rushia also do not forget, Kizuna AI. I feel sad that their will gone forever. That why, I limit how many Vtuber I like to watch and make a promise for my self, I will retire from watching VTuber after my favorite will retire or gone.

Streaming is like football (or everything else, really), everyone wants in the game but only a handful made it to the top

I don't watch Vtubers regularly, and yet it was a hit too close to home. Well done.

Vtuber started with one,
Then many joined the hype, many started popping up here and there.
The competition to gain fans becomes very tight
They have to have a gimmick that makes people love them
Some start to work as a group
Some still remain a solo act
But at the end of the day, not everyone will reach the top
Some retire without people even caring
Some did manage to have proper goodbyes

Guess that's just how things works in entertainment industries

I suppose for a business owned Vtuber there's practically zero hope left if the business decides to end it. Even if it was the person behind the avatar that decided to leave the business, perhaps due to being dissatisfied with their contract or for any other reason, there's little hope because the person can't continue it outside the brand due to copyright reasons. The business probably can't hire any random person instead, as it wouldn't be the same Vtuber anymore, even if it looked the same on screen.

An indie Vtuber is a different thing. There's no reason why the entertainer couldn't make a comeback even years later, perhaps because they happen to have more free time again. An indie one owns the rights to their own avatar, after all.

As a fan, graduations are always painful, but something I've always wondered is what it's gotta be like to be on the other side of it. It's obviously probably a painful experience if it's not by choice, but even those who make the choice on their own I imagine it's gotta be bittersweet still.

What's the saying that goes, you're truly dead when there's nobody even remembering your name anymore.

Eh, Rushia honestly dug her own grave. Never felt remorse when she graduated since that's just the obvious outcome for what she did. Surprised that she still wasn't blacklisted from the industry after doing all that lol

I've watched Temako a few times. Checked out like 3 of the weird non-live action ASMRs and subscribed. It was clear to me she was struggling when more and more of the "person inside / 中の人" live-action "fleshtuber" content gradually appeared on her channel. That said, she's actually quite memorable to me, and I read this oneshot while imagining her voice going with it.

I'm just very surprised I that learned she very recently retired through manga in MangaDex, of all places. I may be subbed to her but I have like 300+ subs, oh god how did this happen I guess it's because I haven't actually been watching any Vtubers for a few months now. I... I did it... I managed to escape the bottomless Vtuber rabbit hole after 2 years...

Frankly, I share their opinion that Vtuber characters die when their 中の人 finally retires. If the 中の人 "reincarnates" with a new character, the old character is still left behind, effectively still dead. Hope Temako's 中の人 is at least doing well, and that she retired because she found something better to do in life that makes her happy.

I still don't get why the ”graduation" system for vtubers is even a thing. like, i get why they do it for irl idols, but when your persona is completely digital, there's no reason why there needs to be a system for retiring vtubers who are still fine.
And why do they unperson them as well?

Such is the truth of life actually. As a person involved with this world since 2015 i would like to say one or two things. It's understandable as a human frustration getting bigger as your efforts doesn't make any difference. I truly understand that, i checked out her Twitter, she retired because of her will broken after 2 years of streaming yet doesn't reach out people as she desired. It's a part of life, apart from virtual personas we die and people will forget us eventually too. That's the natural flow of life. I hope she will be happy in whatever she will do. Sad reality is hard to coming term with. That's why I say to vtubers i support to approach vtubing as a hobby, if you don't hold high expectations you won't hurt or bitter in case of failure. There's some girl out there started like her they didn't achieve huge success but still doing it for 3 years. They're family and friend like to me and nobody feels sad. Because from their perspective it's a hobby and we share the same interests so we're like a pub friends but also know when the time to leave arrives we won't hold any regret. It's just sad reality.

It's really sad. We can only hope to be remembered by people after we die. I will remember Temako, because she did her best.
