The reason its so cringe is because author is trying to portray the adult characters as adults when in fact they have the thinking of teenagers.

@pepork Every single prefecture in Japan has an 18+ age of consent law on the books, so there's basically no place in the entire country where the thirteen number is relevant anymore.

As for our protagonist, kinda like how statutory rape works, allowing an underage person to live in your house can get you hit with kidnapping charges, regardless if the child (teen or not) was doing it willingly. It's definitely a murky situation to be in, and protag should be a lot more careful about who knows about their situation. The scumbag could anonymously report him and shit would hit the fan pretty hard.
