@Soticoto, so you don't found it compelling and deep? And, you called it happy? So trading all you have and all that you might have just for three days of happines is happy huh, i would say it bittersweet though. And plot, hmm, I think authour already did excelent job plotting this story though.

First we have a man with seems like he hold no another value in his life anymore. So he sold his life, because he just feel like, "dang it, my life isn't worthy anymore, so may as well just sell it to get any penny that i could get."
But, as the story progress, we see him actually have something that he value, or atleast found something that he want to hold in this pathetic life he has, which his childhood crush, and he then did everything he could to meet that childhood friend, to hold on to new value/mean that his life find. But, sadly his childhood left him instead with another hole, a big hole.
He succumb to emptiness, but...
If he can't get happy, at least he can become someone else reason for a happines, right?
He will die soon, so have nothing lose right? So he sacrifice everything he have, again. To become that someone.
But, in the end.
He still feel like nothing, and after Miyabi left him, he realize to have someone by his side, atleast just one person is enough to make him have value, to have meaning, to be happy.
And, in the midst of his emptiness, Miyabj comeback, and also sacrife everything she have to be with someone who she want to. Miyabi herself also now free to do anything that she could.
And the couple then spend the rest of their life with the happiness that they can find through sacrifice, and finally have found the meaning that they have been searching all along.

This is my take from the story, and i think this is beautifull.
The story has done a great job to present this, and I don't agree with what you said.
And basically the high score, speak for itself, how the story resonance with people.

@Twia : No, it is the opposite of "compelling and deep". The average death in Gantz is more "compelling and deep" than this dross. At least some of them you don't see coming there.
As for the happy thing, you just said it yourself. He opts to trade out a long, unpleasant life in exchange for an extremely short but utterly carefree one. And then he gets his happy death... as opposed to struggling to stay alive or dying in some visceral manner... he just fades away softly.
But somehow this is treated like a story or something. No. Something was announced and it happened. That isn't a story. It is a single event, and the most predictable one imaginable. There is no struggle, no tension, no turns, no changes. There is no substance to this manga at all.

The high score just goes to show how many gullible and stupid readers there are to be moved by something so completely flat and pointless. There are actual good manga out there, and people have the nerve to classify this brief breadcrumb of the absolutely asinine alongside them... It makes a mockery of the entire score system.

@SotiCoto lmao never have i seen someone said H.P Lovecraft overrated when at that time of its release it's a compelling story. basic plot? i know that anyone would reference themselve to that short period of time someone have and what can they do with this finite time but look there like only 3 or 4 title i guess including what i said that have this same genre.
your judgement for shitty story vague. you didn't read this but said it's shitty, you didn't read the title that i said and called it shitty, in the end it's the difference between taste i guess i would call berserk shitty too just because it takes shounen troupe while adding heroism upon it, unnecessary rape and mild nudity, a bad reference of apocalyptic monster with shitty character design but hey i didnt read it so that's all i know

@aatlass : You really need to work on your readability. I mean your fractured sentence structure makes it really troublesome to figure out what you're trying to convey.

That matter aside, yeah, Lovecraft is kinda overrated. Not because they're short stories, but mostly because they tend to all run on the same basic premise that what is unknown is automatically insanity-inducing... also he was racist as fuck, which was kinda funny. I mean one of his stories was about some guy discovering he had African ancestors, and it is treated in the same manner as otherworldly horrors. I laughed a lot at that one.

What else was there in that jumble of text you responded with? Something about "shitty shitty shitty" whatever. I did read this story. That is precisely how I was able to judge it so thoroughly. There wasn't much of it so it didn't kill too much of my time, relatively speaking. Not sure where you got the notion that I hadn't read it from. I'm guessing you just arse-pulled it arbitrarily because it suited your purposes. Not smart.

Anyhow... Berserk is seinen, not shounen. It is a lot darker, a lot grittier. Things have more impact. Changes are often more permanent. Characters shift over time. The WORLD shifts over time. And more than that, Berserk inspired a great many things. Which is to say that most things that are similar to Berserk are that way deliberately because they're referencing or homaging it... e.g. the entire Dark Souls game series... and Dragon's Dogma for that matter. It is rather pointless to criticise something that is the same as other things because it came first... as when it was first made, it was NOT like other things.

Anyway... I'm really getting tired of seeing replies to this silly 22440 thread over and over again. They've eaten up more of my time than the poor excuse for a manga itself did, and aren't any more entertaining.

@Soticoto, oh well, let's just agree to disagree then. I believe we see this story as entirely different it seems.
How I see, it's a story of a man who change troughout the story, at the end he become a different man from the start. It's there in plain sight. Even Miyabi change too.
And he don't "get" his happy death, he earned it. Because his action, influence another. A man that give up on life, but in the end change, and find that life is worth fighting for.
And it's seems like what you're looking for is a story that more complex and intagible plot, like A song of ice and fire maybe? If that is the definition of "good story" of yours, then you are at a wrong place then. (a song of ice and fire is good indeed).

I can't deny there are many a good manga out there, but for me this one also one of the best,
Q.E.D.

@Twia : Like GRRM will ever finish writing the next book...
Anyway... if you could just not vote on anything ever again, that would help. And please don't reply any more. I don't want to be dragged back to this page again.

@aatlass : Was that sarcasm? That looked like sarcasm.
For the record, Dragonball is kinda dated now, but some aspects of it are still interesting given the time it was made in. Arguably the original is more entertaining than DBZ, since there was more emphasis on humour and less on prolonged shounen battles... Better than Urusei Yatsura and its complete lack of progression or change at least.
As for Devilman... too weirdly religious and kinda arbitrary in places. The ending was awful. Devilman Lady was better and had more to it for the most part, but for some stupid reason it went full "intelligent design" towards the end and completely crashed the plot in the same kinda arbitrary way as the first one. The 1970s Devilman anime was so-bad-its-good cheese though, so I was able to enjoy that ironically. None of them are particularly like Berserk in any case, nor anywhere near as good. Devilman kinda reminds me more of Evangelion.
I'd like to say I don't usually bother with old stuff... but I guess I've been through quite a few old things now.

Worked well for its purpose; interesting and rewarding just enough. Overall, a nice read.

We've all got our preferences albeit others might dislike. Even so who cares?

Enjoy the things that make you happy regardless.

TL;DR
I like my sunny sideups with ketchup.

@RuinRui : So you're suggesting only people who like it should rate it? Do you understand how stupid that is? That kind of foolishness only leads to everything getting high ratings regardless of their content. It would completely destroy the purpose of having any sort of rating system in the first place.
Not the idea of a rating system isn't already being ruined by people uprating useless wastes of space like this manga. I only posted here to discourage that sort of thing and highlight the flaws that should have been blatant to anyone from the get-go.

Here is a good tip on how to enjoy a manga

Don't look at the rating, just read it yourselves and see whether you like it or not

And don't let random people on the internet tell you about what you should enjoy and what you shouldn't enjoy. Everyone have their own taste

Also @SotiCoto
Why would they believe anyone would give a shit about someone dying for whom the entire premise of the story revolves around them dying soon? It is like saying water is wet.
It's not about whether he ended up dying or not, it's about HOW he die

@contrast123 : HOW he die is unspecified. It was some weird magical life-selling thing that was never actually justified. Like he and his convenient plot-gifted girlfriend just dropped dead like someone was playing about with a Death Note. I'm about 99% sure that something actually completely omitted from this short pseudo-story wouldn't be the entire point of it.

I must say that I am with SotiCoto in this one. While I dont think it only deserves a 2/10, I read it expecting a masterpiece and it was average at best imho. It's a story about a guy trading his life so he can have a girlfriend for 1-2 months basically

Well I come back to read more fun comment, and wow it seems like some people don't know HOW a story can mostly work.
Ever heard plot device? That shop who buy people life span is plot device (and I also read a few novels from this author too, and from what I read from his works, he usually use this, so there are no deep explanation about how this plot device of his each work basically, but this is something normal in creative industry, because it's not the story main focus, it's just there to progress the story)
And do you know inciting incident? It's basically when MC at somepoint have to act different with his usual behaviour. Btw, do you see it?

And lastly, a story should have (sometime there's none, though) something interesting inside it or a unique situation. And this is what exactly what happen with all of the story that exist. (And in this story case, it's also use a boy meet girl trope you could say, but that's also happened in another story too, heck MC don't just get another girlfriend it's through his action that he moved her heart.

Oh I just remember, you know that typical harem manga? Another girl who do not win is basically the same as plot device too)

I can't force people to say it masterpiece, but i can say my piece: up to this day, people still buy ticket to make them cry, even though they KNOW EXACTLY that they would cry.
For example: Hachiko. Almost everyone have heard a tale about this faithful dog even way before the movie created, so they know exactly how the story ended. But, the movie still make a profit. Btw, I search it rating and it get's 8.1 in Imdb, not high but not too low for just a movie with a single event, and a movie that almost everyone know the ending eh?

So? What's your point again?

Fuckin Hell...
This comment section is by far the worst in this website because of guys like @SotiCoto who for some reason has to fight with everyone to prove his opinions are right.
I know i'm wrong with the "don't rate it" shit but come on man... be better than that.

Seriously? I'm being dragged into this horseshit 22440 AGAIN?!

@RuinRui : It is a trashy comments section, yes, but that is because the manga is trashy and the people liking it are aggressively trashy... and also because prats like you keep dragging me back here. I've said what I needed to say and attempted to leave. Yet I keep getting spammed with notifications. How long does this have to go on for?

@Twia : I'm guessing English isn't your first language. That post is not easy to discern meaning from... but from what I can see you're trying to justify it because of what people, generally, do? That won't fly. People are stupid. People do many stupid things. That people do things doesn't justify anything.
