That doesn't get at the original question, because it doesn't have comparable over-all popularity to that of comic-book super-hero fantasies in which the main character is transformed by some exogenous event. And, while The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe predates Spider-Man in particular by about twelve years, it certainly doesn't predate the general class of comic-book fantasies of his sort. (Further, the Narnia story didn't pick-up the vast majority of its present popularity until 2005.)
