They aren't embarrassed when they're hungry. It's the "breaking of the mood" caused by the stomach growling that makes them embarrassed. Usually this act is mostly done by females but can be seen by guys to when they were acting, or in the middle of acting or doing something important and the the growl happens as soon as he eases up.

To make it simpler, look at two teenage boys who does some physical activity or just chatting and one of their stomach start growling. Usually they'll just pay no mind to it and talk about getting some food.
Next, another pair of teenage boys in the middle of a serious debate or fight and then right in the middle when the tension is high....one of their stomachs starts growling. It cuts the tension and becomes embarrassing.
For girls, I think it's just more an image thing.
