What his father did counts as abuse, but it doesn't justify the murder of his wife. It doesn't justify any murder, really, but to actually target his own wife just to make his daughter more vicious is particularly vile.

Not entirely sudden though. He's been mentioned before, and actually shown (as someone clearly sus) in Chapter 10.

The idea itself isn’t bad, but the execution here is… clumsy. A lot of people used a lot of words to say nothing of substance, and it feels like the author railroaded the MC to this situation without thinking.

A lot of the wind is taken out of this stories sails when the primary goal of our protagonists is to protect the royal family, and the royal family have consistently been at best incompetent and at worst actively suicidal levels of stupid
