That's the only time he said it to her & it was an indirect "I think I'm falling in love"
He says he loves her more times in the Web Novel amplied text (including, as I said, that "Yami-senpai, MY girlfriend", during chapter 3 of his PoV), I have to look them. But even in the manga, that was not a indirect declaration. Is very strong: "I am already fall in love, WITH YOU, OF COURSE".
She recognizes that he's worried about her & blocks him so she won't know if he passed or failed her test of showing enough concern to break her resolve. Which we know is a test she thinks he failed b/c she goes off on him in the crash out about not looking for her.
Not. She really thinks she is not worthy of him and break with him is a self-imposed punishment by the attempt of suicide of his mother. She recognizes in her inner monologue in chapter 40 she really didn´t want to be encountered. Other thing it´s she being a tsundere menhera with contradictory desires and yes, progresively getting mad, literal was just see Yuu and she lost all her -precarious- mental sanity at the few minutes.
Yes this is true but she was also playing this role w/ Yuu and thinks Yuu believed her act.
True, but definitely she plays much more that role with Hikari than with Yuu (and of course, is more easy play that role with a naive girl like Hikari, than with the boy who literally deflowered you). At least to him, she doesn´t talk about she had sex with other men and never plays be a whore, just a bad girl who could or couldn´t not be a virgin, like Kazusa with Haruki.
That's a thought bubble after she's already decided to ghost. There's legit no evidence Yuu knows any of her last names b/c, as he's admitted in the short chapters, he just doesn't know much about her.
Of course, but the point is definitely her surname was already Sudo in this point of the story. So, she perfectly could said to him during those 3 days. And of course, if Hikari didn´t say to him the real name of "Aya-chan", much less she are going to say "Taa-kun" her surname.
Because to her she's Aya-chan. I dunno about you, but when I'm relating anecdotes about people I generally just use the names I use for them.
Still a disrespect, you has to give at least once the real name of the person, over all if you are talking with your supposed best childhood friend. Use always a nickname for a person and not his/her real name or surname is a disrespect and just this little detail securely would avoid all this disaster. Still a disrespect Hikari did with her friends too, who had to pressure her to gain the real name of "Taa-kun".
And of course, she never showed photos of "Aya-chan" to Yuu. I bet the poor boy dies ipso facto there if he sees the photos of Hikari in swimsuit along Yami using exactly the same black sexy bikini she used to have sex with Yuu in the hotel 3 days journey -and Maruto talked about this detail in X when he released chapter 28-.
I hope really Yami at least would have clean that bikini, but yes, Hikari definitely touched a clothes whom in the past definitely were in contact with... sexual fluids.
Hikari is a high achiever who got recommended for an academically challenging school - this seems like a totally obvious of course she'd go thing given everything I've ever read about academics in Japan.
She didn´t get the recommendation until third year. Is logical Yuu thinks she will go to study in the same high school as him (and not, was not guaranteed she got the recommendation and she securely had to work hard to achieve it), and again, she doesn´t seem worry in the most minimum before the idea of she will have to spent less time with her supposed best friend, and of course, she never asks him about his own school choice.
That doesn't change that Aya and Yuu explicitly kept Hikari in the dark about their relationship so she really can't be faulted for persuing him.
Again, Yuu didn´t keep Hikari in the dark about their relationship beyond than the two hours between the kiss and the confession. That is the only moment where he really hidden it to Hikari and his last words in WN chapter 38 proofs he recognizes his fault on this.
Sure, I think his actions are understandable. I also think Hikari being upset is understandable - very frequently situations aren't a clear cut one person is right and one person is wrong.
That doesn´t change Hikari never ask to him ever about his past couples -I mean, she never even ask Yuu for Seki the kouhai-, and of course, when he asks her if she feels bad in the chapter 36, she LIES him and she says she is upset just by the two hours lost by "the dead phone", so, she is lying him too and saying she believed in his "little lie" about he leaving her in Seen during that time.
There's no evidence of this?
Aya's never been to his house - it comes up in the chapter where she goes to Hikari's. That means his parents likely never met her, which would be incredibly suspicious after six months if they knew about her. Also Hikari and her mom talk to his mom & it's never mentioned and like moms talk about this stuff, especially if the girls go to the same schools.
Yes, that is my point, he probably say her to go to his house to meet his parents and she denied it, as all the most of the other things Yuu proposed to her. I mean, even Hikari had to make an effort to convince her to go to her house.
But Yuu securely talked about her with his parents and again, he securely asked them by please doesn´t say nothing to Hikari (by the reasons already mentioned, and again, his cowardice), that would be the reason why them met Kaneda (and he can use Kaneda as cover to his night with the love hotel with Yami) and Hikari doesn´t even know who is Kaneda.
Yeah sure - his behavior is both understandable and caused harm. I think this is one of the themes Maruto is exploring on repeat here.
His behavior and HER behavior. Again, both failed mutually not just a love interests, but as friends too. For all this, I will very upset if Maruto didn´t left them have their version of the conversation of Haruki with Setsuna in the train to the airport of Narita where happened what happpened with Kazusa.
It would be very pathetic from part of Hikari avoid Yuu in this point, and equal by his side. Very Eriri acting, very coward to this point of the story. Even if they decided anyway put in stand-by their confessions until save Yami or whatever.
And also, if you want Ayami being a villain so good as Kazusa, she needs to proof she is still able to exert influence over both him and her, even after Hikari and Yuu joined all the pieces in their own conversation and taked decisions about it.

I don't disagree, in fact I very much agree with you that Aya is very very serious about this relationship. I just think she thinks Yuu's not all that serious.
If she would think Yuu is not so serious in the relationship, she wouldn´t be talking in so good terms about him in both manga and novel. She just considers him as shy and timid, "the coward of Yuu" in her words, not more.
That's my point, he doesn't push it and they hook up instead. There's no real effort on his part to do not hook up things.
Because the psychological reasons mentioned before. When somebody, including Hikari herself, tries to push Yami, she lashes out with anger. Yuu learned this and he is trying to heal her little to little, a step for step, and for that he doesn´t pressure her, and accepts her plans.
That, and of course, again, SHE IS THE BOYFRIEND OF THIS RELATIONSHIP. He lets she carry the pants always. She takes the decisions. Even in their encounter in chapter 40, you can see how in the first moments she takes again the dominion over him and he leaves she acts as the dommy girlfriend she always was.
He only reacts and starts to act with more self-esteem and dignity when she says "I got bored from you, Yuu", proving their bond is based in confidence. While he could feel he could trust on her, he left she dominated him, and both knows that she likes to take the initiative and he likes that she do it. If this trusting bond is broken, he will act in a very different way.
This is other thing Yuu Takamura shares with Yuu Izumi, the boyfriend who never asked to Miyako Shikimori for her family until chapter 65 of the manga (and of course she never said nothing to him about her family), after Anime Season 1 ending, and because Nekozaki, other girl of the group of friends, proposed going to study in the Miyako´s house. And yes, Izumi here has a face-change very similar to Takamura during his confrontation with Ayami, showing his trust on Miyako is seriously wounded.
Role reversal, role reversal, role reversal... you start to understand why I am saying you has to see Shikimori-san?
That panel has her suggesting the trip and the beach.
Not, she only suggesting the trip to a hotel (to have sex, of course). Who suggests really come to the beach and swim, is him. Again, she doesn´t want to be in open spaces and much less with people... exactly like Kazusa and Kamiya.
And immediately drops it knowing she's lying to him. Again, the point is Aya thinks Yuu isn't that serious about her b/c he makes a bunch of half-hearted efforts that he doesn't see through. Which like Maruto reaffirms by having Yuu go look for Aya and then stop b/c he's afraid Hikari will see him.
Not, that time when he saw Hikari and he was hid, was just once, and never was implied that was his last visit to Ayami school. The boy simply gave up after several attempts, and probably thinking he was looking as a stalker (and Yami thinks he would be a stalker if he really looked her in that way during her mad down rant), if he was afraid from being seen by Hikari, it was securely much more from this, than him not being enough serious with Yami.
Again, first time in six months when she's been telling him for ages now. And it's not even a direct "I love you" but an acknowledgment that he's falling in love with her.
"I already fallen in love with you, OF COURSE" is very directly. Very strong. I accept is his response to the question of her, but is very strong. He definitely detects the doubts of her and gives her the guarantee he knows she needs and later he says he will call her again. And again, in the web novel we have more times of Yuu saying Yami he loves her.
Sure I'm not denying that Yuu thinks he did that - what I'm saying is that it didn't come across that way to Aya. In her crash out Aya lays out what she expects of a caring boyfriend - the shoujo dream of a boyfriend who sees her, fights for her, and chooses her - and Yuu's behavior doesn't match that expectation.
And she says too that would be the actions of a stalker obssesed with her and she would reject somebody thus. It would be fun if this is the reason why she ordered Yuu to shut up when he tries to say something -and again, he obeyed-, she knew about his attempts to looking her -or at least one try- and she was hiding from him too.
The girl, again, is so mentally confused and erratic to take her mental breakdown so seriously. Even more when we see how she lashed out against Hikari when Hikari did exactly that, including of course, all the part of try to whoring her with an old guy.
Which I argued that Aya wants the shoujo dream in a previous chapter w/o having ever read anything by Maruto b/c Maruto is pulling from Romance conventions.
Of course, and these Romance conventions applies with Ai Kamiya in Shikimori-san too.

Damn, peak is back and in style. Fanservice galore, annoying kouhai, Hikari pushing her anger onto her friends who are in no way at fault and Aya just being AWOL. We are so back.

I swear if the ending is Yuu completely cut off from them but Hikari and Yami are best friends still I'm gonna crash tf out I swear
Well, this is exactly the ending of Saekano, but from the perspective of the male MC. Utaha and Eriri
chose her own friendship over her love for Tomoya, went to other Visual Novels company and Megumi the Third Heroine/Boring Girlfriend is finally free to becoming the girlfriend of Tomoya.

But Yuu securely talked about her with his parents and again, he securely asked them by please doesn´t say nothing to Hikari
What in the actual text suggests this?

you has to give at least once the real name of the person, over all if you are talking
This is an expectation that you may have but is not remotely normative. In my culture (the US) folks generally only give full names if they expect you to know the person.

At least to him, she doesn´t talk about she had sex with other men
She teases him for his inexperience and lets him believe she's not a virgin their first time so yeah's she heavily implied to him that she's slept with other people.

mean, she never even ask Yuu for Seki the kouhai-,
She explicitly asks him if Seki is his ex in 18.

If she would think Yuu is not so serious in the relationship, she wouldn´t be talking in so good terms about him in both manga and novel.
Most (all?) of her positive reminisces of Yuu are about how he was a great distraction from the horror show that was her home life. How serious he is doesn't change that.

SHE IS THE BOYFRIEND OF THIS RELATIONSHIP
Which she resents being.

Who suggests really come to the beach and swim, is him.
Can't believe you made me look up the novel:
(Yami) Hey, Yuu. When summer comes..."
(Yuu) "Yeah?"
(Yami) "I wanna go on a trip with you."
(Yuu) "Oh, nice. Where to?"
(Yami) "Hmm... maybe the beach?"
(Yuu) "...Yami-senpai, you'd probably look great in a swimsuit, but the beach totally doesn't suit your vibe."

and never was implied that was his last visit to Ayami school.
It was implied by it being the only attempt mentioned and Yuu being well established as incredibly passive.

she knew about his attempts to looking her -or at least one try-
Where does it say this in the text?

And again, in the web novel we have more times of Yuu saying Yami he loves her
When? Not Yuu thinking he loves Aya, Yuu explicitly saying "I love you" to Aya.

She really thinks she is not worthy of him
Which he failed to communicate to her that she was worthy of him, where the way to communicate that would be to do the Romance things.

Which yes will show up in other works of Maruto b/c Maruto understands genre. It doesn't mean Maruto is a hack writing the same story on loop - I mean he might be, one of the big reasons I'm reading this is to find out.

Yuu have fall in love 2 times and still be dumped be people who pretend to love him, but in reality the 2 Fmc are just selfish, they dont even pretend to look or give some tough to ours boy felling or trying to understand him, Even a bit. Every One seek for the most ridiculous and easy way "blaming someone" to get a bit of peace of mind.

What in the actual text suggests this?
All the monologue of Yami saying she thinks the parents of Yuu are good people who really are worried by him and all that and she envies that family life and feels guilty for make this innocent boy is here in a hotel lying to his beloved father and mother. Hikari also describes them as good and well intentioned people who cared her while her own parents couldn´t be in home.
Parents thus, parents enough present in the life of his son to be neccesary for him lie to them... are definitely the kind of parents who definitely at least asked for him if he got a girlfriend. And of course, they would notice his depression after the breaking.
And again, if Yuu is really the minimally decent guy, we have known until now, why he didn´t say NOTHING to them? For people definitely much more near to him than Hikari. And yes, people disposed to protect his personal life from Hikari -as Kaneda-. He doesn´t need them about the sexual parts, just he is dating a girl and he finally got the loving girlfriend he always wanted and all that.
Fuck, even is possible they have received a call from the hotel too.
This is an expectation that you may have but is not remotely normative. In my culture (the US) folks generally only give full names if they expect you to know the person.
In Japan the people always say at least once the real name of the person in question, over all if they are presenting the person to a friend in common. At least one "Ayami-chan". And even in USA, until as I know because I have kins living there, this is usual too.
Precisely because they are very personal and intimate nicknames.
Or really Hikari wanted her friends would call Yuu "Taa-kun" where she will present Takamura to the girls as her new boyfriend?
She teases him for his inexperience and lets him believe she's not a virgin their first time so yeah's she heavily implied to him that she's slept with other people.
Still very far from the whore she sold to Hikari, with heavy details and all -details taken from her own real experiences with Yuu, of course-. Anyway, this is Japan, the country where we have seen in anime a lot of times to waifus calling "virgin" to the male MC to mock him even if they are as virgin as him.
Even in hentai you can see this several times, the girl fakes being a bad girl who mocks the MC by his inexperience but she was really as virgin than him and this is showed very graphically to the audience -and yes, Yuu securely noticed the blood of the first time of Yami too-.
She explicitly asks him if Seki is his ex in 18.
True, I had forgotten. But still happens several chapters after she saw Yuu with Seki, and only after discover all the thing of him trying to enter in her school and failing the exam.
Most (all?) of her positive reminisces of Yuu are about how he was a great distraction from the horror show that was her home life. How serious he is doesn't change that.
He avoided she fell even so low (remember, she was thinking in whoring herself with old guys) and she was giving signals of recovering during their relationship.
Anyway, Hikari didn´t change nothing ever anyway, she is not even the real reason why Yami returned to school, but her mother (the real reason behind the breakup with Yuu). The only advantage who allowed Hikari got some things was the geographical advantage (reason why was not so easy to Yami cut off her of her life, and you see, right now she did it either), and Yuu didn´t have it. Yuu probably would gone better in his relationship with Yami if they would were classmates, as he complains in chapter 26.
Which she resents being.
Not, she doesn´t resent being. She is very glad to carry the pants and dominate Yuu, as we can see in all the times she enjoys made him arousal, even if she definitely is trying to help him to gain self-confidence, but she definitely is glad of Yuu leaving the initiative to her. And she reached it and is right to boost about "I made Yuu a man" before Hikari.
Again, she is a tsundere. Her jokes with Yuu are her form to take the initiative and express her desires and act it.
Equal she is glad about Hikari being so co-dependent and permissive with her.
Can't believe you made me look up the novel:
In the manga is ligerally different: https://mangadex.org/chapter/161f3b54-1bd3-4ba0-995c-dd6c8dce9d0b/5
"Maybe the sea" is very different to "Maybe the beach" and much more generic. "The sea" includes a lot of places where you cannot swim. Is him who talks directly about the beach and swim.
Anyway, that doesn´t change the point, even if she who proposed directly the beach, he is complaining, and again, he was right, she doesn´t want go to beach, she only wants see the beach from her window in the hotel while she is riding Yuu.
It was implied by it being the only attempt mentioned and Yuu being well established as incredibly passive.
The only serious attempt. Again, chapter 3 of Yuu and several references in Hikari chapters established they had dates in middle school, but Hikari taked them just as a friends hang-outs. Both are incredibly passive, both Hikari and Yuu.
Where does it say this in the text?
Again, this is my theory about she ordered shut up to him after the beating. Could be other thing, of course.
When? Not Yuu thinking he loves Aya, Yuu explicitly saying "I love you" to Aya.
Again the declaration in chapter 29. She definitely considered enough that "I already fallen in love with you, of course" with so emphasis and practically saying in a loud voice in a public space. More shoujo manga impossible.
Which he failed to communicate to her that she was worthy of him, where the way to communicate that would be to do the Romance things.
If this would be there, we would see in the inner thoughts of Yami both in manga and novel. And not, is just the opposite, we have Yami recognizing to herself she is basically asking a madness to Yuu and she would reject him if he really did it. Again, you are taking too seriously the rants of a tsundere menhera in full mental breakdown.
Which yes will show up in other works of Maruto b/c Maruto understands genre. It doesn't mean Maruto is a hack writing the same story on loop - I mean he might be, one of the big reasons I'm reading this is to find out.
I have not said he is writing the same story on loop, and this is my basis to hold my thesis of him using Shikimori-san as inspiration... and also, because he wanted to write a If Route for Ai Kamiya.
This is the reason why Yuu and Yami are Expies of Izumi and Kamiya, even if they are obviously their own characters, how Utaha is not Kazusa even occuping the same place of Touma in Saekano.
Again, if you had seen Shikimori, you would notice almost fastly the deliberate parallels. Fuck, Yom practically copied the image of Kamiya smiling to Izumi for the art of Yami smiling to Yuu... in the bed after their first time.
And because, again, he probably noted the parallels between his own Male MCs and Yuu Izumi.
But again, the point is your theories are things who Maruto had done already in the past:
1) Two rival friends who ended choosing her own friendship over the MC, in Saekano
2) A weak, coward and submissive male Main Character, with both Haruki and Tomoya
3) Re-write the story from the point of view of the girls involved (and where they explains why she likes the MC even knowing very well he is a pathetic coward), like he did with Kazusa and Setsuna in WA2, and with Eriri and Utaha in Saekano. Fuck, in Saekano is probably Megumi the only one girl whose her PoV we never received it.
Ironically, polyamory/harem ending is probably one of the few things Maruto never did before (even if this was always a declared goal of Setsuna in White Album 2)... and this was explicitily rejected by both girls in Shikimori. Both the title pink-haired yandere and the blue-haired menhera were agree in the rooftop they prefered the other girl would be the only one girlfriend of Izumi, than share him.

and I am very secure Hikari never said Yuu the real name of her friend
Pretty sure Hikari did say Yuu's real name to her friends. Ayami/Yami just assume Ta-kun meant something else until chapter 10 or 11, where Yami finally realize that Ta-kun=Yuu

Not, the friends had to pressure Hikari to get the real name of Yuu. And yes, is in this point, in the group chat, who Yami sees the messages and realizes Taa-kun is Yuu.
And she definitely never said Yuu the real name of "Aya-chan" was Ayami.

Still not as fucked up as 'i wanted to be hurt by love' (yet lol)
Yami didn´t say a similar non-sense minutes before her attempt to have sex with Yuu that night in the love hotel -chapter 24?
Too much emo/edgy energy
She definitely would like this song:
Definitely this fits a lot with Ayami -and with Kamiya-:
The pain I have created, melts together with Fate
Call me distortion
Hey, please forgive me
This knife is your beautiful future
but even so it´s going to be so painful

PS. And yes, this song was composed by the same guy who composed Unravel, securely other of the favorite songs of Ayami.

Yom must have had a field day drawing this. Tights and underwear and silly faces on every page
Yom definitely enjoyed a lot draw how Yami was able to make Yuu put always that face of silly in love and with too much blood in his lower head to think clearly

Parents thus, parents enough present in the life of his son to be neccesary for him lie to them... are definitely the kind of parents who definitely at least asked for him if he got a girlfriend
That doesn't mean he's not either lying to them or being evasive the way he is with Hikari.

And again, if Yuu is really the minimally decent guy, we have known until now, why he didn´t say NOTHING to them?
Because he's ashamed of his situationship with a high school dropout? But also it doesn't matter why, the point is nothing in the manga points to him telling anyone about Aya.

over all if they are presenting the person to a friend in common
Yes that's an introduction, friend in common being the key point. Hikari is not introducing Aya/Yuu to each other and does not know Aya and Yuu have her in common when she is talking about them to each other.

and yes, Yuu securely noticed the blood of the first time of Yami too-.
That is the type of "he really sees her" detail that absolutly would be in the Yuu flashback chapter if it were true.

Also I feel like I wouldn't be a responsible adult if I didn't make clear that many girls don't bleed their first time.

she is not even the real reason why Yami returned to school, but her mother
Aya was gonna drop back out her first day back (went back to her spot) until Hikari passed her messed up prank test.

She is very glad to carry the pants and dominate Yuu
I've already had this fight on loop with GennArc - agree to disagree on our reading of this relationship.

"Maybe the sea" is very different to "Maybe the beach" and much more generic.
These mean roughly the same thing in English, the just refer to different parts of the same place (water vs sand). And yes Aya wants to go to the beach - she wants to do outdoor things with Yuu, it's in her thoughts in the fireworks chapter.

chapter 3 of Yuu and several references in Hikari chapters established they had dates in middle school,
It establishes that they hung out, not that he invited her to explicitly date like things like the amusement park.

gain the declaration in chapter 29.
So we agree that the only time Yuu told Aya he loved her was the implict "yes, [I'm falling in love with you]"?

Again, you are taking too seriously the rants of a tsundere menhera in full mental breakdown.
🤨 I just read it as a teenage girl screaming her real feelings out into the void b/c I think it's a good characterizarion of a broken teenage girl. Also them being rants doesn't mean they're not her real feelings.

I have not said he is writing the same story on loop,
You are though by trying to project all his other stories on this one - some of your posts have more on his other works than this one. The characters may share characteristics sure, but the characters in this work have distinct characterization that shakes out into a narrative path organic to the characters in this story.

Man, I'm all over the place with this. At one point I'm like he should have told her immediately when he found her and at another I'm saying he should have waited.
Really he should have just agreed with Hikari and gone home, but I'm sympathetic to him feeling like he'd lose his chance to confess if he did that. And possibly fear that Aya would have the crash out w/ Hikari that Aya basically did.

This thread
Honestly even I don't want to read all of it. 🙃

I just wanna note how fantastic this art is. I’m not even talking about the weird locker room scene, the expressions alone are priceless. Look at that final page! I will never stop reading this series.
