With reason I couldn´t remember it. That comment is literally 9 months ago.
Anyway, as I said, the normal teenager is not so irresponsible as Ayami. This is the reason why Maruto gives her a so traumatic past, to explain why she is disposed to take risks who Utaha and Kamiya never did, because both girls never were so presurred to extremely.
Ayami likes to play with fire to later cry when she ends burned, precisely she wanting stay a complete week in the beach hotel when Yuu said her would be a huge imprudence with the parents of both is a good example.
Anyway, is very fun see you effectively never were able to really read the text of the PoV of Yami. All the world saying you the only real mistake of Yuu in his relationship with Ayami is the scene where she proposes moving out with her, and you insist in your recklessness.
In my whole -- granted, still pretty short -- life so far, I've never felt this good.
"Did you want to go to school with her that badly?"
And then, drunk on the moment, I go and step on a landmine.
"......If I'd gotten in, I could've been your classmate too, Yami-senpai."
"......I see."
Yuu...
He took a moment, carefully picked his words, and managed to defuse the landmine I'd just stepped on.

But that kindness of his only made my heart stir uneasily.

Again, he didn´t go back with Yami once he saw her again. He was being just gentle to get an appropiated closure with her, as much we can blame on him for want be again friend of the right now best friend of Hikari -and yes, is in this way both they returned so quickly to their couple dynamic in this dialogue in the classroom, as friends, before Yuu leaving it for go to Hikari-.
He decided have a relationship with Yami precisely as a way to get over Hikari and can love only to Yami, and she knew it, she says directly it in her chapters she is decided to make Yuu forget Hikari. And he was reaching it until the moment Yami ghosted him and broke up with him.
His actions with Hikari after Yami breaking up with him, are much more coward, questionable and did damage to both, but with Yami, Yuu definitely did nothing wrong.
No I agree with u he didnt do Yami any wrong but he for sure did Hikari wrong and I'll die on that hill

Both Yuu and Hikari did wrong for the other one. Both failed as friends, as love interests, as everything. The mere scene of Hikari paralyzed in the door while Yuu was beated by Yami is a perfect example of her being a fool who always came late to everything. Just as Ayami said from her.
He lied to her with the dead phone, and she lied to him when he asked if she felt bad and she said she was fine -this was her lost opportunity to mention the kiss-.

Fucking hell, been stuck with work and Silksong to get into discussion and suddenly 15 pages of comments, luckily didn't happen too much for me to comment this time. The only thing is , following how Yuu has acted until now, the Side Dish is the one who will make his case for him when Hikari's friends try to get into what happened and everything is on the table. I hope he gets some answers and starts to get proactive, or he may just abandon it all.

And then he meets a girl who he has fun talking to and who offers the thing he has been longing for. Why do you feel like he has to also reject her in favor of his hopeless love that has been dragging on for years?
This has been bothering me for a while because I cannot see it like a real problem here when for some people is like his original sin and he "diritied the sacrosanctity of love" and they would never, which I smell like a very dreamy teen / puritan attitude. Of course I can't really know nor I'm saying is an ok situation per se, but I sometimes doubt anyone who really hates him for that has ever dated anyone or knows about their friend's love life. It's like when in other mangas people say awful shit like "damaged goods" because someone had a previous relationship, it's so atavistic.

I think because it was so jarring. Up until that moment we had seen how much Hikari liked him and got glimpses of Yuu liking her (them running into the middle school couple who revealed that Yuu tried to get into Hikari's school). We have this happy-go-lucky manga and then BAM we see Yami kissing Yuu and we're thrown for a loop.

When the flashback chapters occur we see how devastated Yuu is that he didn't get into Hikari's school so we again feel how much he cared for her. To go from that to immediately having sex with Yami is off-putting. I would have been more understanding if their relationship started slow - with them getting to know each other better, going on dates for a bit before having sex. To have sex on their second meeting and not know anything about each other doesn't seem like something the Yuu we've been shown would do.

The Yuu we'd been shown up until that point was hesitant and passive. He was shown to be stuck inside his own head doubting himself. For him to just go along with everything Yami was doing does match up with his passivity but I would have figured he'd want to get to know a girl first before fucking her. It makes it seem like he's just planning to pump and dump Yami which does not line up with the Yuu we've been shown. Later on he appears to have developed feelings for Yami but I wonder how much of that is him actually liking Yami or just liking what she can do for him.

For those people it's probably less of a life stance and more of a manga approach. Because it's normal for manga romcoms that a childhood friend stays in love for years and years and never moves on.

Not really. Up until that point he was mostly chill, maybe a bit clueless, but definitely not "hesitant and passive". It was always Hikari's POV before then. I think you might be mixing in some posterior knowledge into your view.

You're right, I'm letting my knowledge of what's come after affect my view of what came before.

However, I still think it's out of character (based on what we were shown of Yuu up until that point) for him to immediately sleep with Yami.

Based on what we've seen of Yuu after his relationship with Yami, aka hesitant and passive Yuu (at least with Hikari), it's wild to imagine him just immediately jump in the sack with her. It's like a totally different person. But it's not like Yuu has really changed all that much.

Maybe he was always this person and the Yuu Hikari sees is an idealized version.

I think it was well portrayed how he came to love Yami at that moment. I was also taken aback when it's revealed he had this relationship with Yami, but as their story was told I believe he really loved her in the end. We haven't been shown him being a player or a total opportunist that will take whatever he wants, I would also despise him if it really was like that. But even when his relationship was explained, there are still people hung onto the fact that he dated Yami while still being in love with Hikari because it's like a taboo for them or something. We've shown he connected with her and they were progressing. I don't know, I find strange to hate him for that now when it's mostly explained.

These days I'm watching Twin Peaks and oh boy, the amount of relationship flip flopping is insane, they would get really mad at every character. And most characters there end up being sympathetic in some way or another, but what they do relationship wise is in order of magnitudes worse than what Yuu did. I know it's not the best comparison, but for what I've seen here, some of these people could not watch that show without raging.

I don't know, I agree with @mug3n.
And even before they started dating properly, I think it's very fitting for him to do it in the heat of the moment. I argued about that with story645, but I think he already enjoyed talking to Yami a lot + it was kinda like what getting drunk after a major happening is for some adults, a way to forget about his worries and problems and let excitement take over.
Even after their failed first attempt, this is how Yami describes how they spent time
We called it an evaluation meeting for Yuu's failed entrance exam and other stuff, but it was really just me teasing him nonstop.
Whenever he tried to turn away from me, annoyed, I'd lean in close, catching his gaze from below or the side so he couldn't escape.

When I gave him my most mischievous grin, Yuu would glare back at me, looking just a little sulky.
But before long, he'd crack a sheepish smile, despite himself.

It was, by far, the worst night for both of us. We agreed on that.
And yet, we couldn't stop talking.

We'd catch each other's eyes and burst into laughter...
meaning to say they both enjoyed each other's company.

I think that's more or less what it was too & that's why Yuu characterizes it as wound licking and Aya as providing comfort.

Yeah, like I think the exact opposite - that Yuu would have never shared that he was in love with Hikari if his plan was to sleep with Aya.

Which I don't have moral qualms with Yuu hooking up with Aya and think it's deeply understandable and I don't necessarily think he should have forever simped for Hikari, I just think Maruto writes the arc in the way he does to show that Yuu is risk avoidant. The arc starts with Yuu making a plan he fully expects to fail and then when it fails taking it as a sign from heaven that it's hopeless, instead of taking the time and space to regroup and make a workable plan. This is reasonable sure, but it paints a picture of a character who does not put himself out there.

would have figured he'd want to get to know a girl first before fucking her.
So I think one of the reasons Maruto has Yuu sleep w/ Aya after a minute of knowing each other is precisely b/c of the validation - here's Yuu despondent b/c the girl he's known most of his life hasn't fallen for him while this cool girl who he's just met is into him enough to sleep with him.

To push on this, a bit more, the climax of basically any Romance novel is the hero putting it all on the line for the heroine - that's the fantasy of True Love*.

So even before we get to the sleeping with Aya, Yuu breaks the fantasy of a romantic lead by not even taking that risk. Then he compounds this in the confession by keeping hidden the one thing most likely to be a deal breaker. So I think the frustration with Yuu is less the specific act of sleeping w/ someone else and more the cowardice that led to the sleeping w/ someone else.

*Which yeah, I've argued before Aya is articulating this same fantasy in the crash out when she asks why he didn't look for her, knowing that would require Yuu risking Hikari finding out (which we know from Yuu's POV is why he stopped looking).

ETA: To push even further, I wonder if this is why Yuu's cowardice gets debated/pushback so often.

So, definitely you never would tolerate even a single chapter of Shikimori is not just a cutie.
Yuu Izumi is literally one and all of the words you wrote here. Your complains about Yuu Takamura are exactly the same rants against Izumi during Shikimori anime transmission in 2022.
Anyway, Yuu Takamura was right. Even in Romance Novels, we expect the hero only would risk everything for the heroine... if both the readers and him are secure about he is reciprocated by the heroine.
This is the reason why Hikari fans doesn´t have right to complain about him in this point.
If not, he ends seeming a simp. And yes, so many people here who wants a simp male MC "putting it all on the line" for the indecisive Chorizo, you definitely will enjoy Kanokari with the simp of Kazuya as MC.

Maybe he was always this person and the Yuu Hikari sees is an idealized version.
Because he was very pressured by Yami to do it. Her words in the web novel left very clear:
Even when we left the family restaurant or when we came in here, Yuu had been whining the whole time. But all it took was me pretending to lose my temper, and he caved immediately. What a pushover.
(...)
Yuu started fumbling with the buttons on his uniform, clumsily popping them open one by one like he was tearing them off.
Makes sense, doesn't it? No matter how nervous or scared he was, we're at that age. He wants this, no question.
And besides... there's stuff he wants to forget, right? Of course, he's going to go for it.
"You can mess me up as much as you want, okay? I'll comfort you..."
"Yami... Senpai..."
Yuu's whole body was trembling as he came closer, reaching out to touch my shoulder. Okay, now you're one of my people.
And to difference to the usual romcom -including Shikimori manga where there is a chapter (chapter 23 to be exact) where the main FMC was close to have sex with the male MC and just his mother saved the virginity of Izumi in the last minute-, nobody appeared to interrumpt them or avoid nothing or save the virginity of Yuu.
How in White Album 2 nobody appeared to stop Haruki and Kazusa had sex in that bittersweet graduation night.
I think it was well portrayed how he came to love Yami at that moment. I was also taken aback when it's revealed he had this relationship with Yami, but as their story was told I believe he really loved her in the end.
This.
IMO he accepted following her to the love hotel because in his mind, he is getting a girlfriend. This is the reason why he already calls her "my girlfriend Yami-senpai" that morning in the love hotel after their first time in the omake chapters with Izumi Takamura PoV.
And anyway, they weren´t soooo fast, they became a couple in their SECOND date, date where both passed several hours talking in that restaurant, eating and drinking, definitely they are not Natsuo and Rui in Domekano.

Hey, I have been thinking about this for quite a long time, but don't any of you also think that Yami is like a senpai version of Rinko Kobayakawa, but with a more complicated household?
She is basically Ai Kamiya the 2nd FMC of Shikimori is not just a cutie, but yes, in a senpai version and being the more complicated household the reason why she connects so ridicuously fast with the Yuu Izumi of this series (Taa-kun)
Doesn´t help the mangaka of Shikimori awarely or unawarely ended basing Izumi-Kamiya in Haruki-Kazusa from White Album 2
