Yuu would also be happy to be emascualted saved by the girl he was trying to impress for years.
Please tell me more about media literacy.
And talking about media literacy, yes, this is the page you are quoting:
https://mangadex.org/chapter/09252a91-93a2-4ea8-abdd-b9dbccd40d74/2
Yuu is literally pleading here to Hikari to peg him in this moment:
-Geez, you are really a manly one, Hikari
-Again with that?
Note how Hikari leads the dance and finally, he believes, she is acting as the assertive girl he always wanted she would be.

That is - Yuu's decision to not voice any concern over Hikari to her two friends in this chapter, was noteworthy enough that those two friends even made a point of highlighting it at the end.
Or could be just Maruto giving us a hint about Yuu and Hikari finally managed to speak between them and deciding suspend the mutual confessions (who they already did) to go to rescue Yami.
And this is the reason why he gave us this ambiguous chapter from the PoV of the Hikari´s friends who didn´t know nothing about all this fuck up all. The WN leaves even more clear:
"I see... Hikari haven't told you, gals"
"Do you think she's a loose-lipped woman who talks freely about boys to others?"
No, I think so.
Usually it's completely open!
But if she suddenly went completely quiet, it would mean that it was a major emergency for Hikari. There was no way that we, being nosy (don't say that about yourself), would just leave something like that.

"See, that is the cool of Hikari..."
"What are you laughing at?"
"Sorry..."
For once we could be optimistic before assume the worst scenary, not?
And yes, Hikari in her savior complex towards Ayami is even more able than Yuu to do something like that.

I think that's a bit of a cop-out, because this whole saga spans multiple years of time and it's clear that feelings and context change between the three of them
Well, it was relevant for that specific time when they were in middle school and when he tried to enroll in the same school as her.

You initially said that you agreed with most of everything else I wrote, but picked out one part that wasn't really all that important to my thesis in the first place
Yeah, I don't disagree with this part, I am mostly contesting that this was his repeated mistake from before. If this wasn't an important point for you, then we're all good.

We've never really seen it in his actions or decisions.

Betting his confession to Hikari on passing the exam for her school?

If it was just about her recognizing that he likes her then the act of chasing by wanting to go to the same school should be good enough, but Yuu has a whole thing where he feels he can only "build a case" by passing.

...Well, I’m sure there are people who’d say, “Why not just confess, even if you don’t get into the same school?”

But if I could do that, I would’ve confessed way back in fifth grade.

Since I can’t put it into words, I have to build a case with actions—surround the truth with facts.

He said he wanted a real chance of success with Hikari. He wouldn´t declare just to being rejected with 99.9% of certainty, as all those guys who did before him.
And yes, is other thing shared with Haruki Kitahara, Tomoya Aki and Yuu Izumi... all them declare to the girls they likes only if there is a real opportunity of being accepted.
And this is very realistic to these insecure, submissive and shy teenager boys.
Here a example from the boy being able to confess just when the girl takes the lead:

Again, "Shikimori is not just a cutie" was the main inspiration of Maruto for this work, at least according my theory
And Shikimori being precisely a lighter and more optimistic retelling from White Album 2 definitely helped a lot in this regard. In this way, the circle closes it.
Being Miyako Shikimori herself basically a Megumi Katou with less insecurities and being openly dominant towards the boy she likes.

At least these two characters, Haru and Yuki, have been spared from drama and seem to have their shit together. Fuck it, i'll root for their happiness instead!

Everyone too focus on the Yuu/Yami/Hikari love triangle to notice Yuki's building her own harem in the background.
She always had it, in the Hikari WN chapters is cleared Yuki is the other "whore" of the group, the other girl who had sex and is not "pure" anymore, along Ayami.
And according Hikari, Yuki is the girl with multiple sexual partners Ayami says she was in the past.

This is the presentation of Yuki and Haru in the Web Novel, chapter 5:
My childhood friend has no idea about my feelings for him.
......But within our girls' group, I end up sharing every little detail about it.

Haru: "Then go after him more aggressively, Hikari~!"
Yuki: "Yeah, yeah! And if you can't confess, just go with the flow and, you know, invite him for some fun instead~."
Hikari: "Wait! Didn't you just skip like three whole steps?!"

Not too long ago, we had a sleepover at my place, and, of course, the topic turned to love. I ended up casually mentioning Ta~kun, and ever since then, it's basically become my daily duty to give updates on my love life.

Haru: "Whoa, whoa, that's a bit much. Hikari here hasn't even kissed anyone, let alone that."

Yep, once again, Haru is loudly broadcasting my lack of experience for the entire classroom to hear.
I wanna die.

If it was just about her recognizing that he likes her, he could just confess, it doesn't change anything about the situation. The point was to make her see him in a different light while also letting her know he is doing it because of her.
We've discussed this already, but I will say it again - sometimes you need something big or shocking/surprising to happen to change someone's mind or perspective, and saying "I want to enter the same school as you" feels much more like an everyday event while "it turned out he secretly took exams to enter the same school as me, even though it should've been out of his league" doesn't.

I don't understand that last two pages. What do they mean about the whole trust thing and not telling Hikarin about it?
