The worst thing a monarch can do is give someone else most of the responsibilities for practical matters in the court and the kingdom. That someone else would be the real ruler of the kingdom after a while. It would be sheer insanity to nominate someone the monarch has previously offended to such a position. It's worse than that. If Nazelbart was unscrupulous he could quite literally take the kingdom for himself. After seizing all the power in everything but name he could arrange for them all to have 'accidents' since they conveniently already birthed a daughter with a right to the throne. He makes himself regent until the princess comes of age all while indoctrinating her. Later, either he or his son, marries her when she's of age and for appearances sake has to relinquish power.

The novel mentions that Robin was simply very ambitious and wanted to marry a woman with the highest status (and money) out there so he could live an easy rich life. For him, that highest woman was the princess.

I think he was not smart enough to realise the greater responsibilities and scrutiny that came with being the princess' partner though.
