So it was logical why he didn't court her back then.
... Now, in his recent behavior, he's very dumb. She explicitly said "No" and instead of thinking "Perhaps I shouldn't butt in, just keep myself on the sidelines to support her in the future", he went all Nice Guy™ and asked a freaking dragon for a duel.

Honestly I gotta say I like him. The dragon said 'fight me' and he didn't back down, but unfortunately, like Greed pointed out, he was too little too late anyways.
