God that conversation was such a pain to read. I am fully aware that gendered pronouns aren't nearly as common in Japanese, but articulating "that person" every single time just comes off extremely clunky. Did they seriously specifically use "that person" that many times in the raw, or did GDS just forget to use "they" like any normal English speaker would?
who are they? the only one I remember helping her is the MC alone
using just "that person" would be significantly better tbh, if it feels redundant then just blame the author who wrote it that way, no one's gonna complain
I find it funny that both of you want the opposite of each other.

I checked the raw. The problem isn't even about using gender neutral pronouns.
In Japanese, the subjects in sentences are often not included and inferred from the context.
So, after mentioning that she had "a friend who was good at studying", most of her sentences omit the subjects completely. Throughout the conversations, she only used the word "that friend" 4 times.

But obviously you can't do the same in English. Otherwise, you would get "In the final semester tests, ranked first out of the whole first year!"
So, translators need to insert the appropriate pronouns in English.

Also in English, you can just say "I have a friend. He is kind." and it's obvious that the friend is a guy.
In Japanese, though, you need to be explicit if you want the listener to know the friend's gender, like adding "The friend is a guy."

But obviously the gender of the friend isn't always important in a conversation, and you don't always need to mention it.
So, the best way to handle this translation is with "that person" or "they" (which is used for singular gender neutral pronoun), especially if the ambiguity is used for plot.
