The timeline seems messed up.
How could he be already eighteen years old when his village was annihilated when he was ten years old, an event that seems like it happened just a moment ago? The possibility might be that time there somehow sped up.
If that is true, it reminds me of one of the Star Trek episodes, "Blink of an Eye".1

He's always done this, he's terrible at it, he keeps throwing in parallel stories at random without explaining anything, this must have been the first work he did, because it seems very amateurish in very simple aspects.
He was seven, not ten, when the village was annihilated.
