@Shamz it's basic evolutionary theory, you see it in many species, males tend to have a lesser sense of self preservation and will fight to the death if needed to protect the females, it's likely due to the fact that one female can have one "litter" of young at a time (irregardless if that is a "litter" of one like humans or a litter of 5-10+ like dogs and cats) but one male can father many litters as long as there are many females...so even though so many of we humans like to think of ourselves as great beings that overcame their primal urges, the lingering traces of them still haunt our DNA (seriously, we are an arrogant species, we went and gave ourselves a formal taxonomic genus and species classification which literally translates to "wise man" purely on the basis that we were merely the only sentient species we currently know of, if that's not hubris I don't know what is)
