A human form makes it easier to forget he isn't human. So I would assume it he maintains a human like appearance to not feel feared or segregated from the people he cares for.

Its also like how that time i got reincarnated as a slime had so much exposition to really establish the world

Slime is an early example and in that main character does have a distinct appearence still. In this, mc has the very generic insekai protag look and its number 400 in said genre. Hence why it just starts to feel stale?
