Well if you try to see it from the other perspective, Sante lost the closest person that he swear to protect even going through became the knight he probably gonna get so depressed. he lost his own reason to live he quit the knight and wandering aimlessly now.

Staying to serve a country that was indirectly the cause for the death of the one person he wanted to protect and serve is a pretty good reason for him to quit. Anyone close to him would be sympathetic to his reaction but also feel both impressed and sad that he still had the professionalism to report back so he could properly quit.
