There is an udon restaurant in Tokyo that serve udon with shabu-shabu pork and thin long slices of tempura burdock root arrange like a net over the bowl. It was really tasty.

Were they actually eating the bones of the fish or just the meat like the cheek and stuff?

Loved the panel of play-boy biting the head directly, and the rich dude was like "HHNG-?!" and did it himself.

Gobo was considered an IJA war crime when it was being fed to allied prisoners who thought it was cruel and unusual punishment

Cheek usually. If you get the chance, order "Hamachi Kama" (Yellow Tail Collar). It's part of the fish right behind the gills. Really tender, really delicious.

the charges were starving POWs and stealing Red Cross food supplies meant for POWs (among other crimes) and the Japanese later claimed the burdock thing as a way to downplay the 30% death rate in their detainment camps

don’t swallow the propaganda

one of my favorite food made by my mom is a stew with a whole snapper in it. eating the fish head is like eating a crab: you need a bit of work to get all to the edible parts. it's fun, and delicious
